iOS 5 kills multi-touch gestures for original iPad owners

Apple's iOS 5 launches today, and the newly-revamped mobile operating system will add over 200 new features. However, while the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S will be benefiting the most from the upgrade, original iPad owners may find their tablets a bit harder to navigate. In adding full multi-touch gesture support for the iPad 2, Apple has disabled the feature for the original iPad, a change which is sure to leave at least a few early adopters feeling the sting.

Several months ago, Apple introduced multi-touch gestures that could be enabled on all iPad models simply by connecting your iPad and Mac, and turning the feature on using the free Apple developer software called Xcode. Once these gestures were switched on, users could use various finger swipe combinations to switch between apps, return to the home screen, and other common actions. Now that Apple is officially introducing the feature in iOS 5, iPad 2 owners will now officially be able to use gesture controls without manually enabling them, but those with the original iPad will have their hands tied.

It's rather perplexing that Apple is locking the ability to use multi-touch on its original model slate, as by all accounts it appears to work without a hitch. However, the iPad 2 — with its faster processor — is undoubtedly better equipped to handle the feature, so perhaps it's better to be safe than sorry. Whatever the case, original iPad owners are left with either the choice to return to their old ways of navigating, or upgrade to the iPad 2.
