Massive LCD multitouch table runs Windows 7, costs $18,000

What would you do with 55 inches of touchable high-definition?

When you sat down for breakfast this morning (assuming you're one of the lucky few that has time for such a luxury) you probably slid your chair up to a 4-legged amalgamation of oak and wood screws. But did you know that for the low price of just $18,000, you could have been staring into the depths of the internet instead of the natural grain of a long-dead tree? Computer manufacturer Ideum hopes that's just what you're looking for, and its new MT55 Platform multitouch table will fit the bill quite nicely.

The pricey table sits 31" tall and sports a 55" 1080p display capable of recognizing up to 32 different touch inputs at once. That means 16 different people can use the tabletop device at once, with both hands no less. It runs Windows 7 along with a suite of custom software that makes use of the table's unique touch capabilities. 8 GB of RAM and a speedy Intel Core i5 processor come standard, but that can be upgraded to an even quicker i7 processor upon request.

The MT55 Platform looks like a capable computer overall, and its massive multitouch screen will surely allow for some fun times, but we're not sold on the astronomical price just yet. If touch isn't your thing, you'd be better off buying a 55" HDTV and pairing it with a moderately-fast desktop computer. Though, if you're in the market for a massive touch device — and have a cool $18,000 lying around — there are probably less useful things you could spend your money on.

Yes, but that one's not real, just like most of the tech on the show.

Funny. Even in the picture they couldn't come up with an actual use for this table. I mean, when have multiple hands gone through pictures on one table before like this? Almost never. Hey boss, what we really need is a virtual table so we can all grab pictures at the same time and move them around!

Funny thing, if you watch the new Haiwii Five O show they have had one of these since it started. the Military have these as well, as soon as there is a market for these buy the avarage consumer the price will drop to reasonable levels.

Good! Now my coffe table can crash with my computer!

I don't think I'll be setting my glass of OJ and bowl of oatmeal down on that anytime soon. Not only would I be worried about cracking it - what about spillage? It might be useful in a workplace for photographers or somesuch, but not until the price comes waaaaay down. I keep my computers far from my food and beverages.
