Medical team livetweets beating-heart surgery for the first time

Houston's Memorial Hermann hospital brings the operating room to the Twitterverse

Subjecting Twitter to a play-by-play account of the contents of your lunch is one thing, but a hospital in Houston just took the micro-blogging service to intimate new heights. Tuesday morning, Memorial Hermann Medical Center livetweeted a beating heart double bypass operation on a 57-year-old male patient on its official Twitter account, @houstonhospital. The team also set up a hashtag, #mhopenheart, to invite other Twitter users to pose questions to a cardiologist during the procedure, and offered a video feed (captured by a helmet cam) so the not-so faint of heart could tune in live.

The surgery, performed by cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon Dr. Michael P. Macris, wrapped up within roughly two hours and all went smoothly — a good thing, considering the Twitterverse was looking on, hopefully not in the midst of breakfast. The account issued a mix of live surgical updates ("Pericardium is being opened and retracted...stand by"), accompanying Twitpic photos, and cardiac facts interspersed with repeated warnings about the graphic nature of the tweets.

Less than two hours after the patient's chest was opened, surgeons had stitched him back up and sent him off to a four to seven day recovery process. Though the subject of the social media experiment remains anonymous to protect his privacy, we can only assume that he'll be livetweeting the quality of the hospital jello throughout. It's a shame that we weren't treated to the same level of surgical voyeurism when the coolest bionic octogenarian ever underwent surgery to transplant the world's first 3D-printed jawbone.

If you are in your 40 and have a family history of heart disease, get those arteries checked out. Dont let the doctor talk you out of it either.

Don't think this is cool at all. I would want my doctor focused on my proceedure & not on anything else

Read the article. You might be amazed at what it says.

Does Getalife actually think that the surgeon was standing there with a scalpel in one hand and a smart phone in the other? Good grief!

doesnt say who was actually tweeting, I assume the doctor was not. But I agree, they should remain focused on the task at hand. As for the doctor answering questions from the audience? no way.. this is not medical school. he can give a lecture after wards.

Change your diet before it is too late, avoid red meat or at least cut down, way down.

Been on the receiving side of stents, got 2 when I was 48. Don't ignore symptoms of shortness of breath, mine turned into a full blown heart attack after about 10 minutes. Within 2 hours of symptoms I was out of surgery, that was 9 years ago. The first thing I did was chew an aspirin before going to hospital, doctors said it probably saved my life.

I don't see how this could be viewed as anything other than a distraction. Videotaping in the OR is common, but to have it set up where someone is asking them questions during surgery? As the physicians are scrubbed in I'm assuming there is a dedicated individual in the OR suite handling the online correspondence. Seems very strange. Physicians usually like limited numbers in the OR as they are responsible for every single individual in the room. I don't understand why the physicians would want this as it could lead to litigation if they make a mistake. There would be no way for the physicians to prove that it wasn't due to distraction.

Thank god for the invention of stints being used to keep arteries open.

I don't not want my surgeon tweeting while cutting me open and being distracted with questions. He's got enough on his mind when cutting me open. Do they really need another challenge to make the surgery more difficult? Why do people think this is a good thing? Just because you can do it doesn't mean it's a good idea. Do they think that they are so good at it they can multitask? Who consented that the surgeon can tweet about the surgery? Isn't this against HIPAA?

I hope the medical association will levy a huge fine against that quack. When you have somone's life in your hands it's no time for publicity. What a jerk............

Stupid / irresponsible stunt just to get some attention?

Seriously, this is not news. This is just a warning to patients to stay the hell away from this team of doctors (and maybe the hospital). They are more concerned about getting 15 mins of fame than they are about the health of the patience.

Doctors more worried about media attention than patient...They should have their Medical licenses revoked for 6 months and not charge the patient....Twits
