NASA creates first-ever high resolution moon map

Lunar craters, volcanic features, and more are revealed in new images

Domino's Pizza may have plans for a franchise on the moon (if China doesn't claim the entire thing first), but where will they put it? Until now there has only been low resolution images of the moon's surface available. All that has changed thanks to NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. On board is a camera that could fit in the palm of your hand that takes pictures covering most of the moon's surface once a month.

Over 69,000 of those pictures have been stitched together by the science team at the Arizona State University in Tempe to show a single map of the moon. Each small pixel represents about 328 feet across and two football fields in height. The only exception to the coverage are the poles of the moon which don't receive enough light for the camera to capture images, but another image recorder on the orbiter is mapping those regions with the assistance of lasers.

With this new topographical map in hand, scientists can now "...better understand impact crater mechanics, investigate the nature of volcanic features, and better plan future robotic and human missions to the moon," according to Mark Robinson, Principal Investigator of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera. And, of course, people like Richard Branson whose world's first commercial spaceport is nearing completion can set their sights on the next celestial destination for intrepid travelers.

It's about time someone created a map of the moon. I hate it when I'm driving there and get lost.

you obviously dont have a smart phone with gps than lol

There is currently only 1 flag flying on the moon. If China thinks that it can claim the entire sphere, it may be a little late. ;p
      • Vishal 6 mths ago
flag flying on the moon??? Oh and btw.. six countries have their flags on the moon!
      • Beer 6 mths ago
There are 4 countries with flags on the moon, plus the EU. The US has 6 flags on the moon.

Cool! Where are the martian base photos that Buzz Aldrin talked about seeing?
      • BIGG MARK 6 mths ago
i want to see them too
      • jeffrn 6 mths ago
Thats why they didn't photograph the poles, because of low light? I think not
      • Ragyp 6 mths ago
BM and Drone, let's hear (or watch) Buzz saying that! Please post the YouTube number of that- of Buzz himself, saying that. Oh and Nightmares? What leads you to think that an area of the Moon so dim it apparently keeps *ice* frozen in the vacuum of space, is brightly lit?

Great. I'll make sure I have one of these handy for my next road trip to the moon.

they got cut out. with all the technology in today's world i'm pretty sure NASA-"never a straight answer" can use a photoshop like program to cut out anything they don't want us to see

So, have they set a date to blow up the moon yet?
    • Max Fubar  •  Springfield, United States  •  6 mths ago
For man to live on the moon, we'd have to burrow into it and build underground cities. If we did that we could have space for another 20 billion people. IT would end up a hollwo moon fopr the slaves and Earth would be reserved for those that are entitled, the mega rich and their cronies needed for them to function like Roman emperors.

where's the link to see the hi-res photo?

I think I see my house... It's next to the crater
    • anon  •  Little Rock, United States  •  6 mths ago
I can see the moon from my front porch!

my question is, if we had the technology to get to the moon in the 60's, and assuming as fact our gov really doesn't give a #$%$ about if they are endangering the lives of astronauts, then what is the likelyhood of a manned base on the dark side of the moon? such a base would make us kings of the world, with the abililty to strike any nation from space... so why wouldn't they? why haven't they? they have infinite money. why haven't they built a base using nothing but robots, in preperation for a manned base? why haven't they used robots to build a base at the bottom of the ocean, or underneath the ice caps? i know some of you will think "conspiracy theory" but seriously, if the money and technology is there, with no compunctions or reservations on the part of the builders, why not? who knows what they are really doing, what technology they really have. nasa is a front, a spectacle for the public, it's not the real space program by a long shot....

Forgot to mention, launching out of the moon is much easier than the Earth. Just wondering if they had a plan to generate oxygen so it can be used for sustainability and fuel.

So where are the high resolution pics of the many Apollo remnants? LOL

wheres the map of the moon with the pics that show the structures of the long gone visiters...

take a gander at all those craters!

I was hoping NASA would image it down to one inche in resolution and use stereo pairs to map the topography elevation map to 3 inch resolution. Then I was wanting to see video games use it as the terrain for their games. Millions of kids would then explore every square inch of the moon. Who knows what they might find?

It is all possible with current technology and it would be cheaper than a Mars mission. Iceing on the cake would be to image it in 100 spectral bands and thus map the materials of the surface at the same time.

did they really say...."Each small pixel represents about 328 feet across and two football fields in height."....man, journalism sucks nowadays.

"Each small pixel represents about 328 feet across and two football fields in height."

The author obviously hasn't quite grasped the concept of "High Resolution."

My GPS still doesn't work on the moon. I have a signal, but the roads don't show up.
