Netflix changes business models … again

No name change, this time — just DVDs by mail

Do you miss your old Netflix account, where you just paid for DVDs by mail without having to stream movies, too? If so, good news — the nation's biggest video rental company is once again offering their DVD-by-mail service for $7.99 a month.

The business model is anything but new. It's how Netflix got its start. Last year, however, they changed the name of their DVD-by-mail format to Qwikster until they were ridiculed into changing course, requiring customers to also buy their DVD-streaming service. It's hard to argue that Netflix is a well-run company with a solid business plan — the company is simply reacting with fear to news that Verizon and Redbox are forming a competing company.

If you're interested in "Netflix classic," you can head over to their website and subscribe once more. The company is offering free one-month trial memberships, but to take advantage, you need to be a new customer.

"Do you miss your old Netflix account, where you just paid for DVDs by mail without having to stream movies, too?" What a strange statement. Why would anyone mind DVD's AND streaming?

You've been able to do that since the split first started. This is not new. Maybe a new name by calling it "classic." This article seems more like an ad.

This "article" is a complete waste of time. The only reason it was written is Netflix advertises on Yahoo. There is no new information here. I have been getting "come back to Netflix" emails ever since I left with this exact same information in them. Thanks for wasting my time Yahoo.

Isn't this how it's been since Sep?

        Thats what I thought!!

I'm confused. I have been paying just for DVD's since they broke apart the pricing. How is this new? Or was it that they weren't allowing any new customers to become DVD-oly customers? Confusing article.

I tried to sign up for dvd-only last fall and it was not an option. You had to first get the streaming service then ADD the dvd rentals. As a new customer, no option for dvd only.

I miss paying $9 for both DVD's and streaming...they should have "grandfathered" existing customers when they first started messing up the structure in the first place.
      • ME 3 mths ago
Yes yes because letting you rent DVD s for $2 a month is profitbale. Get over yourself. Ask your manager at KFC for a raise.
      • Michael_Vicksdog 3 mths ago
Me... uh.. that's what they were doing in the first place then they changed it. It's scummy to jack your rates 60%, and if you don't see that I feel sorry for any children you may spread your idiot dna to.

Me, the company was profitable in the quarters leading up to the pooch screwing last year. The price increase was motivated solely by greed.

Yea netflix is going to be the myspace of movie rental biz soon with their bonehead decisions.
    • The Leaky Trojan  •  3 mths ago
I don't have Netflix. Everytime I read about them I am more confident in my decision.
      • Me 3 mths ago
how confident are you about reading yahoo news?

        NETFLIX STINKS!
    • Brian M  •  3 mths ago
Wonder how much the CEO gets paid to make these stupid decisions. Its a wonder these clowns continue to find employment, especially at the salaries they command. Netflix would have been better off without him, and saved a ton of money in comp to boot.
      • Jason Erdmann 3 mths ago
Maybe he was the cheapest CEO they could find which would explain some of the decisions Netflix has made.
      • Bored 3 mths ago
The problem with CEOs, and many others for that matter, is that they get the mistaken impression that once they have done one thing very well, they will now do all things very well. I believe they stop listening to those counseling them, and start to make decisions based on their new "superiority." I've had bosses like that (much smaller scale than a CEO), who eventually stop listening to reason. They honestly begin to believe everyone thinks like they do. A piece of advice: if you're in business and hear someone say, "Oh, they'll buy this (or that). They love us!" - it's time to run away, or fire the guy. You can never assume people will love your products or 'still' love your products, especially when you start to change the rules like Netflix did. I haven't been back since then, and haven't missed them either.

Problem is their streaming selection is freaking awful. Thinking of cancelling....
    • DING  •  Chicago, Illinois  •  3 mths ago
Am I missing something? Each service cost about 8 bucks a month. How is this any different from what they announced back in September?
    • RandyW  •  Tampa, Florida  •  3 mths ago
I cancelled the streaming because the stream would freeze and the movie couldn't be restarted. Now almost every DVD I get is flawed in some way. This is not the way to run a railroad. Will cancel completely when my list is empty.

here we go again .....if you screw with your customers too much they will get fed up and just find a new movie provider !!!
    • John  •  Albuquerque, New Mexico  •  3 mths ago
Netflix would be a lot better if they had #$%$ that people actually wanted to watch on it. Instead, they have stuff that you feel obligated to watch because it is the best of the worst as far as selection goes.
    • Libertarian  •  Sacramento, California  •  3 mths ago
      Classic Coke=Classic Netflix.
    • WisconsinWillie  •  3 mths ago
This is the change that occurred last September and upset a lot of their customers and caused an exodus of long time customers like me, so I don't know why it's being reported again now. I've said all along I would have been willing to pay an increase to keep my 1 DVD at a time and unlimited streaming with them, but was unwilling to pay 100% more for that same plan only with limited streaming.
    • ...........  •  3 mths ago
Netflix still stinks!....they don't put on new movies!!!
    • john  •  Indianapolis, Indiana  •  3 mths ago
      reed hastings is an idiot.
    • SeekingSanity  •  3 mths ago
When they offer the combined services at a reasonable price, I'll return OR if they get something worth watching on streaming service then I'll reconsider. So far, I've watched some Amazon movies, some redbox movies and some free TV programs via several websites. As noted elsewhere, there is zip new in this offering, and Yahoo proves how idiotic it is by reporting this as NEWS....give me a break!!
    • Mike  •  Winston-Salem, North Carolina  •  3 mths ago
I will NOT go back to Netflix, even if they paid me. Too little, too late.......and Netflix should fire their ridiculously STUPID CEO.
