Obama spams Republican Twitter handles to urge debt compromise

With the debt ceiling debate looming and political tensions at an all time high, the President has encouraged Americans to contact their representatives in order to express themselves and make their voices heard. This morning, the official @BarackObama account took it to the next level, tweeting out the Twitter handles of congressional GOP members and urging fellow tweeters to demand a compromise on the gridlocked issue.

The President's staff appears to be going in alphabetical order down the list of states, starting off with Alaskan representatives, and moving on to Alabama's. During a short morning speech, the President preempted this action by mentioning Twitter as a way to contact members of Congress.

While contacting your Congressional representative to express your views is always a good idea, the flurry of official Obama-inspired tweets could be seen as "Twitter bombing," a spam-like practice on the social network. In a Twitter bomb, a high-profile account asks its followers to direct a wave of tweets at another account. The targeted account may suddenly find itself with thousands of new followers and tweets, drawing unwanted attention (and often ire).

While it remains to be seen if today's tweets from the President will encourage political change, it's certainly an interesting, tech-savvy political tactic.
