Over 40% of computer users are still using decade-old Windows XP

Microsoft's past operating system woes might have some people living in the past

While many computer lovers eagerly await the arrival of Windows 8 and Mac OS X Lion, a massive segment of users takes a decidedly slower approach when it comes to embracing new operating systems. According to an uber-detailed infographic by blog Manolution, 40.7% of users still run Windows XP on their computers.

XP, which was released way back in October 2001, has since been succeeded by both the not-so-well-received Windows Vista, as well as Windows 7. In that same time frame, a half-dozen new versions of Apple's Mac OS X have seen the light of day. And yet, Windows XP is holding on strong. By comparison, 36.5% of users are up-to-date with Windows 7, while a measly 7.1% have stuck with Windows Vista.

There is likely a multitude of reasons why so many have stood by XP all these years. Many who adopted Vista early on actually went back to XP after the new operating system's many flaws began coming to light, and it's likely that some have seen fit to skip upgrading to Windows 7 for fear of a similar ordeal. Not to mention that after a decade of familiarity, it can be mighty hard to let go, even when the future is so bright.

xp PROFESSIONAL ALLOWS ME TO USE SOME VERY IMPORTANT DOS PROGRAMS. PFS FILE AS AN EXAMPLE. WINDOWS 7 WILL NOT LET ME. MICROSOFT WILL LET ME IF I PAY EXTRA.

THIS IS A RIP OFF. MAKE THEM ALL BACKWARDS COMPATABLE. THEN I MAY UPGRADE.

Apparently XP's caps lock function isn't working on "Larry in New Orleans's" computer

apparantly he hasn't heard of the xp compatibility mode in windows 7 too.. but with his challenge with a caps lock, it doesn't surprise me

I frequently work on other peoples computers so I have had considerable exposure to Windows Vista and 7. I am not impressed! On my own 3 computers I dumped both operating systems and run XP Pro.Until the time comes when XP won't function with the programs I use I won't be changing. On my 2 laptops they run faster and with fewer crashes or freezes with XP. On my desktop, because it has so much more RAM, speed isn't as much of a problem. But I prefer XP and there is no appricable speed difference between 7 and XP. So given that things that are amazingly simple with XP are an endless pain in the %#% with 7 I have dumped the later OS and gone back to XP with no regrets. At some point these computers will die and there won't be hardware compatible with the older OS. My hope is by that time there will be a non-MS option.

I'm dual booting - non-internet connected Windows XP for games, internet connected Windows 7 (will be replaced with Windows 8 on release) for everything else. Best way, since only XP can run the older games I play, but 7 is better for everything else cos of its features :-)

Or maybe it's just that a lot of people don't feel the need to spend time and money to replace something that already works. Unless you need to buy a new computer with a new OS already on it, why bother?

Agreed! It's all just a gimmick to make Jobs and Gates richer.

      1. MS program checked my system and informed me that I need to upgrade my graphics card to use Windows 7.
      2. My computer is old, but still does everything I need it to do using XP.
      3. It ain't broke, so I ain't gonna fix it, or upgrade it.

Hope it breaks soon, hehe. Maybe you'll get over the "hill-billy syndrome" :P

Speaking of Hill Billy's, you're about as sharp as a bowling ball there, Jethro.

The iPhone1 wasn't broke, but the masses still bought an iPhone2, then 3 then 4... You get the idea. I think Apple is a much better marketeer than MS.

XP Rocks...... sometimes newer isn't better!
      • 4brenwood2 11 mths ago
My sentiments exactly! Newer isn't better - I've seen folks get newer cars, computers, mowers, stereos, tvs, washers/dryers and etc.--only to have them recalled w/i months, or have them in the shop(s) w/i months - so I'll stick w/the old over the new anyday (2 93 autos--just topped 100K in last couple yrs; still using 70s&80s washer/dryer; micro, stove, toaster, fridge, vcr/dvd's - all between 80s&90s models - and don't say 'oooo my my-energy hogs' - nope, power runs about $110 mth in winter&$125 mth in summer, & this w/electric heat&air; I maintenance all myself - so older always better in my book)! It's all in how you take of care of and use things - so much is mass produced these days&with such a rush to get it to the public--it's just junk!

Decent products do still exist (of course), you're just living in the past. Fine I guess!

The original XP may be a decade old, but it's been updated multiple times. The current version of Windows XP (Service Pack 3) has only been out three years (April 21, 2008). Most things I own are older than that, and I don't plan on throwing them out any time soon.

I use several computers, with a mix of Windows 7 and Windows XP. They both have their qualities. The biggest drawback to Windows 7 for me, besides spending money on something that I don't need, is that I have a lot of other software and hardware that I still use that is not compatible with Windows 7. It's not just the cost of Windows 7, but the cost of replacing everything else that goes with it.

Switch to Linux and never worry about that problem again.
      • Steve 11 mths ago
I run a linux file server, but until my games run on linux or I can get linux drivers for my cameras, scanners, etc., switching completely to linux is not an option.
    • Allen Davidson  •  11 mths ago
Over 40% of the computers in the past 10 years were built before 2006, when XP was the only operating system available. So, people are still getting plenty of use out of their old hardware and software. Nothing to see here folks, move along...

Not to mention the 120-299 price tag for upgrading to Windows 7. XP is stable and works, what more do you need?
    • Stiglitz  •  11 mths ago
What is the point of upgrading, really?? The final goal of PCs is not to run the operating system, it is to obtain results using applications. The improvements to each succeeding version of Windows are less and less significant while the cost of upgrading is still large.

Started working in the computer industry in '86 and have always waited for any kinks to be worked out. This approach allowed me to bypass ME and Vista and am still happily using XP.
    • Danny  •  11 mths ago
Well hey guess what, not everyone wants to play the "chase the latest software" game. With a new version almost every year and the strict licensing with one per computer and the high price why would we. And oh yeah guess what ...linux is free. There will forever be a newer version of software and newer computers and devices it is called self preservation but that does not mean we have to engage in it all the time.
    • Robert  •  11 mths ago
It's a tool. It works. The new versions are awful unless you are interested only in entertainment. Microsoft took a tool and made it into a toy.

Since I build my PCs, I will simply transfer the XP licenses as long as I can. Most people I know hate the changes Microsoft has made post-XP. They haven't made anything better, they just have to keep screwing around with it to make it different. I even use the "classic windows" settings in XP.

When Microsoft stops letting the marketing people decide what the operating system looks like, they will be much better off. I'll stay with XP as long as I can, then I'll probably switch over entirely to Linux.
    • rr14  •  11 mths ago
My word processor won't run better on Windows newer, so buying new versions is basically just giving money to MS... I'd rather go buy a beer with it :)

XP Pro is great. Runs my games and Firefox. It is easy to use and has a very familiar interface.
    • Scott  •  11 mths ago
So What. If it ain't broke, why fix it? Newer and better isn't always...
    • A Yahoo! User  •  11 mths ago
Well simply put XP worked... Vista didn't work... and Win 7 is somewhere between the two.
    • steve s  •  11 mths ago
I no longer fear hell because I have Vista.
