Pandora gets a facelift, goes unlimited for free streaming music

The music streaming site just got a complete overhaul and a set of social features
Music lovers may be awash in a sea of tune-streaming services at the moment, but Pandora persists as a perennial favorite, especially when it comes to discovering new music. The site, which lets you curate your own custom radio stations, has long been one of the most prominent web music services around — but it was admittedly in need of a facelift.

PandoraNot only did Pandora just launch as cosmetic redesign of its web music portal, but it also lifted the restrictions on how many hours of streaming sonic goodness you can devour each month. Previously, listeners could only enjoy 40 hours of free, ad-supported music each cycle, so if you like to maintain a constant flow of background music, you probably found yourself in the lurch from time to time.

Beyond the freedom of an all-you-can-stream model, Pandora's website is now built on HTML5 (which has powered some pretty neat browser-based sonic experiments) rather than Flash. While that sounds a bit on the technical side, you'll notice the change in speed immediately. Not only does the site load faster, but it offers a more fluid, dynamic design that's far more intuitive than its comparatively clunky predecessor. That speed will come in handy for Pandora's new emphasis on social sharing: you can now share a song or a station to Facebook or Twitter, or just track your favorite tracks within Pandora's new social music feed on your profile.

With the advent of Spotify, many streaming services are scrambling to stay appealing to web music lovers. While Pandora takes a decidedly more browser-centric approach that distinguishes it from our latest, greatest European import, it still has sites like Rdio, MOG, and Last.fm to contend with. While it's difficult to predict how all of these competing services will fare in a post-Spotify music scene, Pandora's new design is a breath of fresh air for anyone loyal to the service — and perhaps enough to bring back anyone who's strayed.

Will pandora play my 8 tracks?
      • Dustin 8 mths ago
No because you would have to open the box holding the insides of the 8 track for it to play it. And we all know you never open Pandora's box.

Pandora is nice but tends to pay the same tracks repeatedly once you've got a big list on your station. It has introduced em to new bands though. Spotify is really great though for when you want to listen to something specific.

There's an option, when you're listening to a song you've heard, to never hear it again, or play it less often. Then you'd listen to more new music! :)

Personally I keep 2 stations: My discovery station, and my mainstay station.

All fine and dandy, but what is going on with the lawsuit against them? This is a nice swerve from the reality of what Pandora really does. I suggest people read a little bit more about their precious Pandora

Could you elaborate a bit? I got mad at them a couple of years ago over the time limit thing, and quit using Pandora. What other beef do you have with them?

Have had Pandora on my pc since it's inception. Tim Westerglen is a sheer genius, and that is putting it mildly. LOVE the new look.

I like Pandora and use it sometimes. I never heard of those other music sites. But there's no reason Pandora should be the only one out there to use.

Do the people who write this copy proof read their own stuff? Curate...Don't they mean CREATE ! What...are they going to start a museum now?

        "Curate" is in vogue now:
"The word “curate,” lofty and once rarely spoken outside exhibition corridors or British parishes, has become a fashionable code word among the aesthetically minded, who seem to paste it onto any activity that involves culling and selecting. In more print-centric times, the term of art was “edit” — as in a boutique edits its dress collections carefully. But now, among designers, disc jockeys, club promoters, bloggers and thrift-store owners, curate is code for “I have a discerning eye and great taste.” "

What about those of us who shelled out $36 for one year of their premium unlimited service, Pandora One? Not that $36 is much money, but I will feel kind of dumb for paying for somehthing I can get for free anyway at renewal time.

Jango is better than Pandora, IMO.
