Sony rolls out free identity theft protection codes

As promised when it became clear that its PlayStation Network issues were due to a massive customer information breach, Sony has opened up a registration website for free identity theft protection. The service is being provided by Debix, an identity theft protection firm that offers both free and paid levels of ID security. Sony PSN users are being treated to a premium level of the service at no cost.

The cyber attack which brought the PlayStation Network, Qriocity music, and Sony Online Entertainment services down compromised the account information of over 100 million users. Details like customer name, address, phone number, and birthday were obtained by an unauthorized third party. Additionally, username and password information was also breached, prompting Sony to require an immediate password change when the services eventually sprung back to life.

Sony remains adamant that no cases of identity theft have been reported in association with the attacks, but the fact that such a wealth of information was released means that every precaution must be taken. If you are one of the millions of individuals with a compromised account, be sure to head to the registration website promptly, and begin your free year of protection.
