Study finds that Facebook users have low self-esteem

The more time people spend with Facebook, the less happy they are, the study shows

Last year, a pair of studies showed that heavy Facebook users have more grey matter in their brains and are subject to a condition known as Facebook Depression. A new study from Utah Valley University suggests heavy users of Facebook may also share another trait: low self-esteem.

The study surveyed 425 college students about their use of social networking use, in addition to questions about how they spent their time socializing offline. Students who spent the most time on Facebook were the most likely to agree with the statement that others had better lives than they did. Those who were more likely to friend people on Facebook they did not personally know were the most likely to believe that others were happier than they were. The study doesn't single out Facebook as the cause of low self-esteem — it could simply mean that people with low self-esteem are more likely to friend strangers than those with happy and healthy offline lives.

Logically, the study makes a lot of sense. When you're constantly bombarded with pictures from friends' vacations, news of new relationships, and videos of last weekend's party, it's easy to feel that others are leading busier and more enjoyable lives than you are. Especially when negative aspects of peoples' lives such as loneliness, sadness, and failure are often minimized or unshared.

Low self-esteem may lead to worsen one’s problem while logging on to Facebook . At Facebook you may ‘Like’ but there is nothing you can ‘Unlike’. At the same time, it’s now proved that users with low self-esteem were less liked on Facebook because of their negative thoughts.

I used Facebook for only a few months, and found it to be almost a complete waste of time. Am I really expected to await with eager anticipation a breathless posting about someone's new muffin recipe (complete with photo documentation) or their exciting trip to the dry cleaner's (let alone their Farmville requests)--often posted by "friends" whose unfamiliar names leave me scratching my head? I pity the people (and we all know them) who compete to have the greater number of friends, as if that quantity were a valid measurement of their intrinsic worth.

A muffin recipe can be quite exciting as can a unique dry cleaning experience. You should value your time on facebook as we do in real life. You will never be able to replace those memories. They are invuable.

Ah, JTM, thank you! I am very glad to have the benefit of this new perspective. I will completely rethink my Facebook experience; and I feel certain that after proper reflection, I too will find my time there "invuable"!

Most of life is waiting for a bus (ie "a waste of time") welcome to the world.

And LOOK! At the beginning and the end of this little piece, you have links to Facebook and Twitter! How IRONIC! Or should I say MORONIC!

I dropped Facebook about 2 months ago and it was the best thing I ever done. Its nothing but a site for self loathing and nosey people. My true friends and family know where to find me and how. Thats all that counts.

      I don't use Facebook.

I read Yahoo news and make thoughtless comments about anything they think is news.
      • SoCal 4 mths ago
I don't use Facebook either. I make thoughtless comments. Spend hours thinking of some way of working the Kardashians, Chuck Norris, illegal aliens, second amendment rights, global warming etc. into my Yahoo posts. Sarah Palin is getting out of fashion, but if I'm clever I can still work her into a post now and then. Surprises me how serious some people are about these posts.

SoCal, not only did you rip off John Smith's funny joke, you made it wordier and less funny.

If find television is a bit of the same - watching funny, active, good-looking people and starting to believe it represents real life.

Again, I find myself asking: do we REALLY need a "study" to tell us this??

So, do Facebook users already have low self-esteem, or does Facebook cause low self-esteem among its users?

people who have to talk, chat, or text someone or get text from someone all day.
      are very insecure people.
they constantly have to feel like someone cares about them.
my cell phone sits in the car turned off unless i'm gone from home.
i never even activated my voice mail account.
i have plenty of friends and none of us feel we have to be in constant contact.
    • danman  •  4 mths ago
lol... dumped my FB page this week. 99% of the chatter is useless and irrelevant to my life.

I wonder how long until people start trying to claim for Disability for this devastating "condition". And how soon after, the pharmaceutical industry markets a prescription drug cure.

NOTE the people surveyed are college students. Other studies show that college students have depression issues.

You think that it might be the stage in their lives.

Of course people who use facebook to meet people are most likely those that are insecure.

On the other hand families use it to keep up with one another.

Most likely this study was not built on the rigors of Science and its parameters were designed to produce this outcome. Bet it was paid for by the depression drug industry.
