Study finds internet addiction causes changes in brain development

A new look at the human brain shows little difference between internet addicts and drug addicts

Is Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) real? A new study suggests it may be — and that its effects can be seen in the human brain.

The study asked those between the ages 14 and 21 questions about how their internet use had negatively impacted their lives. Many of these questions run parallel to those that help diagnose an alcohol or drug problem: "Have you lied to your family members, therapist, or others to hide the truth of your involvement with the internet?" "Have you taken the risk of losing a significant relationship, job, educational, or career opportunity because of the internet?" Researchers followed up with questions to the subjects' friends and families.

Participants who were found to be "addicted" to the internet had significant differences in brain development than those who were not. These include areas of lower volume in the parts of the brain that control emotional processing, executive thinking skills and attention, and cognitive control — very similar to the brain changes in drug addicts. There also appeared to be disruptions in the white matter between brain cells, affecting how neurons communicate with each other. The longer a person had suffered from IAD, the more pronounced the brain differences were.

There are a lot of questions still present in light of the study. Researchers are not sure whether addiction to the internet causes peoples' brains to develop differently, or whether the brains were already like this, making people more susceptible addiction.

Why do they keep saying 'addiciton causes this brain change' or 'alcohol causes this brain change' or 'pregnancy causes this change in the brain'. Just face it- our brains are living organs!! Everything we go through everyday of our lives changes our brain structure in some way! Stop making everything a pathology!!

Because certain things do cause our brains to change more than others...
Like the post above...Repetitive use of certain drugs, repetitive behaviors, various chemicals, stresses in utero, traumas etc...
And with certain things we are very individual...One person can handle certain things much better than others...That's why some of us are good at this or that, and others not...
Some of these studies can be stupid...But, it's good for us to keep educating and studying ourselves...

All of that exposure to information not filtered out by the MSM and the government causes one to develop critical thinking skills as you have to figure out for yourself what is and is not true -- very dangerous.

What is really dangerous is the fact that 50%+ of what you read on the internet is either not true or if true hyped to fantasy level. Fox News this morning was highlighting was was headlined on Yahoo this morning! How long has it been since you read an article that offered "who, how, when, why and where"? True journalism is DEAD, and TMZ has taken its place.

If you start breaking into your neighbor's houses and stealing their jars of quarters to restore your internet service, You just might be an Internet addict.

I just read a study that suggests that the sun is hot.

Of course an addiction will change the way the brain develops. Any type of addiction be it watching tv, gaming, whatever, it is going to affect the way their brain develops. And we already know that some people are genetically predisposed for addictive behavior. This isn't anything new.

How about working on fixing addiction? Oh wait, there are already studies done on that too.

Clearly this problem calls for additional regulation of the Internet. I expect a new tax will be needed to fund research and enforcement of all new regulations.
