Thermal imaging can give away your ATM pin number in 10 seconds

Your body heat may be a thief's best weapon

If you live near the University of California at San Diego, you may want to venture elsewhere if you need grab some cash at the ATM. Researchers at the school have figured out an exceedingly easy way to identify ATM pin numbers, and the method uses your own body heat against you. With the help of a thermal imaging camera, the researchers were able to glean the secret digits of ATM users without ever seeing them press the buttons.

The team found that once an ATM customer completes their transaction, an individual armed with a heat-sensing camera could swoop in and take a snapshot of the keypad. As the heat from the button presses cools, the crook could easily determine what buttons were pressed, and even in what order. In testing, if the picture was snapped within 10 seconds of a customer leaving the ATM, the success rate of predicting the correct sequence was a staggering 80%. If 45 seconds had passed, that rate dropped to 60%.

The type of keys an ATM uses are also a factor, with metal buttons being the least vulnerable to thermal thieves. Plastic pads were found to hold the heat much longer, making the scam possible. Thankfully, thermal imaging cameras are considerably more expensive than your standard point-and-shoot, and a pin number on its own is nearly useless without the matching credit card or other personal information.

Why don't they every report the good things about thermal imaging? It's one of the most incredible technologies and has so many benefits yet it gets no publicity except for this crap.

i would be really screwed if that happenned to me, thieves wiping out my whole bank account, they might get almost enough to eat from the 99 cent value menu.

I'm waiting for it to do a Voice & retinal scan just to use the ATM!!!!

In response to Stoney's comment he's surprised the Republicans haven't started blaming the Democrats for this......I agree. I was thinking the other day.....The I bet the Democrats and especially Obama actually were the cause of the World Ending back in the day! Not Jesus Christ or God.....But it was the Democrats.....

This is Scary.....They're Alwayss coming up with SCAMS.......But I agree with the post from I think it was David: Thanks for letting SCAMMERS know what kind of camera they need and they may want to publish more info on where the CROOKS can purchase this type of camera.....I mean REALLY.....come on....Why don't they even start a Special Criminal Class on this one!

Just using the ATM is a rip off with the fee that some charge to use . Haven't had and ATM of Debit card for more than 10 years now . Don't miss them either . Have one credit card for emergencies and it gets paid off monthly . Use folding cash and sometimes you can get a better deal . Cash will get you a discount with some doctors also .

What kind of stupid atm's do they have in California ? You swipe your card the money comes out and then you enter your pin # ?

Let me remind some of you people how they work, or at least the writer of this article.
You swipe your card, then enter your pin number. Then you select the type of transaction that you want. Then you enter the amount of money you want to withdraw.

By this time at least a full minute or more has passed. Then it asks if I want a receipt with my transaction ? Now we have wasted about a minute and a half. I answer and the money comes out and I wait for the receipt. Now at least two minutes or more have passed
I place the money in my wallet, take my receipt and head to my car. By this time at least
2 1/2 to 3 minutes have passed which is more than enough time for the pads to cool. The article says the rate of being able to read the numbers were down to 60% after 45 seconds.

Oh did I forget to mention if someone gets within 10 feet of me while I'm doing my transaction I turn my back a bit and pull the right side of my shirt tail up so they can see my 9mm automatic sticking out of my pocket and its amazing how fast they go back to their car...

Apparently you and I are the only people who know how the machine works and protect are space while using it. I don't use a gun, I turn around and ask them to move back and just stare at them with a grin. What they don't realize is there is a fine line that separates arrogance from anger and it only takes 1 smart word to cross it. Is it really worth getting a Irish woman angry?

So now the government will pass a regulation making all the ATM owners install new buttons that do not transmit thermal imprints. Then all the ATM fees will go up even more to pay for the cost of the fix. Then there will be a class law suit against the banks for endangering the welfare and safety of their customers deposits in a negligent manner by having buttons on their machines that hold a thermal imprint for up to 45 seconds.

Great idea,, now all I have to do since I now know this is go out and steal a thermal imaging camera somewhere? Could you write an article about where I might find one too.?
    • David1  •  9 mths ago
Just press all the buttons when done.

The thermal resonance would show the pin at a lower variant color , therefore bypassing the full spectrum of the lowest to highest .

Everybody has come up with such smart ways of stealing from one another but their too stupid to think of this? And to think these are the next leaders of our country. At least they've got the stealing part down.

thermal imaging sensors/cameras are not small... they are quite big actually lol. i think if somebody standing behind me was holding that, i'd be a tad suspicious. but like the article points out, PIN #s are useless w/o the card.

lay your fingers on some other buttons too, That should fool them.

So when will we again be able to main thieves? Not just a hand perchance, but an entire knee joint or elbow. Why do the innocents have to be labored with pro-active devices, why not simple retribution? It worked for my ancestors and seems to be the coming thing in light of government being unable to accomplish diddly squat.

I like the idea of using other than your fingers (e.g., pen); so atms should upgrade to entering pins with a pen and or a sign should be posted warning ATM users about jeopardizing their money via the use of their fingertips!

I'm waiting for the republicans to blame the democrats for this too, they blame them for everything else going on except for starting this war were in ,the republicans dont even take credit for that, but they started with a surplus, now the republicans protecting their oil interests caused a 14 trillion dollar debt. so i guess this is along the lines of ripping people off.
      • hmmm 9 mths ago
I wouldn't blame the democrats. California is a liberal state so the values of the people that live there don't suprise me. Most there do what they want. If enough people steal using this method perhaps it will be legal; it's kinda like gay marriage in a way.

Is it a coincidence that your name is "stoney" Just saying.

Quick cure for such thievery: you steal someone else's money, you get shot in the face.
If you don't agree, let someone clean out your bank account & steal your identity; guarantee that'll change your viewpoint...

What a waste ! These people could be Billionaires if only they were willing to WORK at it instead of stealing from others - looking for the easy way out. Prisons are too full now, what's up with that??
    • Bear  •  9 mths ago
Strange as this sounds, use the blunt end of a pen or the pen with the point retracted to push the buttons and shield the keypad with the cupped palm of your other hand makes a highly blurred heat signature which doesn't help the thief much in guessing your PIN.
