Twitter gets new Facebook Timeline-esque cover images, here’s how to upload yours

Did Twitter just step knee deep in controversy? The bite-sized social network just took a page straight from Facebook, and a controversial one at that. Specifically, the Twitter for iPad app got a major update today (5.0), adding a new cover picture option reminiscent of the reviled Facebook Timeline.

There are a number of smaller, easily appreciated graphic design changes to the user interface with the iPad app update. (The Android version got a similar update.) But perhaps the most notable change to Twitter for iPad is the new header image option that works similarly to the way Facebook Timeline's version does. Simply choose to edit your profile using the iPad app, touch the "Header" button, and choose your preferred cover image. If you're visiting Twitter using your computer, you can upload your cover by clicking the image of the cog in the upper right-hand corner and choosing to "Edit Profile." Choose "Design" from the left-hand menu, and then scroll down to the "Customize Your Own" section. The maximum allowable dimensions for your header are 1252 x 626; the file size must be less than 5MB.

Overall, we think the update looks great. Hopefully, it will lead to some very creative Twitter design hacks and perhaps even some Twitter cover-inspired business cards. In the grand scheme of things, it's a much smaller aesthetic change than Facebook Timeline, and should be much better received by the public as a result. But what about you — are you a fan of the new Twitter for iPad? Or does the move toward Timeline take away from Twitter's allure as a Facebook alternative?
