U.S. Navy working on autonomous app-controlled RoboCopters for the Marines

The helicopters will work with the single command of their Apple or Android app

With 30% of U.S. warplanes now made up of drones, it's not surprising in the least that the U.S. Navy announced a $98 million project that will develop unmanned helicopters for the Marines. But unlike other drones that still need human operators, these helicopters will be completely autonomous and can be summoned by — believe it or not — an app.

The program called Autonomous Aerial Cargo Utility System (AACUS) is still in its infancy, and will span five years. Officials are still seeking for researchers that will develop the technology, but they have a pretty solid idea of what they want. "It's going to be designed to work with people who have no flight experience. An operator will pick up his iPad or Android and make an emergency supply request. He'll request that the helicopter come to him and land as close to him as possible," says program officer Dr. Mary Cummings. The end product will be a huge step in autonomy — the helicopters will be designed to take off, plan their flights, and navigate their way with almost no input from their operators.

Once the helicopters are built, one of their immediate tasks will be to provide deployed Marines with a means to quickly get supplies and combat essentials. In the future, the U.S. Navy plans to use them for medical missions including casualty evacuations. Prior to the AACUS program, an initiative by the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory has successfully developed K-MAX — a helicopter drone prototype that was deployed to Afghanistan in December 2011. Unlike the planned AACUS helicopters, though, K-MAX carries its cargo in a slingload and is controlled and navigated by a human operator.

Anyone remember the Star Trek (original series) episode where war between planets was fought entirely by computers? Right down to human casualties that had to report for dying?

Don't forget the radar, infrared, gunner, and rocket apps. How about some cheap blimps for the; Sneak up at night on the guy planting the I.E.D. app.

Why do we have to announce this? Don't we keep military research and development secret anymore?

Ah yes so the Chinese can hack into it and change the code of the App to be directed against its original user genius. All it takes is a good hacker to bread the encryption and then reprogram said drone.

Obviously you've never been in combat. To put it terms a smart guy like you would understand.... Let's just say the pace of events is such that it would preclude the time frame for the events you suggest to occur. If you think it can be done in under 2 minutes from the time the device is spotted (think terrain following technology), I stand corrected. The real problem is breaking cover get to the chopper without getting you #$%$ shut off.

The drone that iran captured is actually intended for akhmanidiass. The CIA sent it you in purpose to take you to the moon, to solve the problem here on earth.

Sounds like a great idea as long as the enemy doesn't have any hackers among them. In that case I guess we'll be delivering their supplies and ammo.

what the he!! do people think app means...it's an APPLICATION!.... I.E. PROGRAM!!!, it is controlled with specialized software.... how else would it be controlled?, why does the basterdized word "app" make everyone gooey in the trousers? thats like walking around specifically saying "smartphone" instead of "phone" like "oh, I'd better check my smartphone to see if I have any missed texts or calls" regular people just say "I should check my phone" stupid backwiping buzz-word users.

educate yourself. most items sold in america are made by american companies. to avoid paying taxes and paying a fair price for american labor, they move shop to china. americans believe in capitalism and they buy this crap. america is almost out of business due to the corrupt ineptitude of american politicians, and greedy american corporations.

it's too bad our politicals are more interested in stimulating the economy with advanced technology that will continue to kill innocent people over greed, wealth, and position. now that our american politicals have stolen 16trillion dollars of american wealth, they nolonger need american patriots (military personnel) to fight and die as they secure oil in another country that we want to kill for. america is so confused and lost.

Then International Left is anti-free enterprise in which the western media is a key alley. The international left which includes the American Democratic Party, a misnomer, really in fact is a faction of socialists, communists, and anarchists with a few traditional liberals mixed in that overall are composed of leadership and many followers that believe in the inevitability and the fall of economic freedom of western capitalism. This group desires to replace our free enterprise system and constitutional democracy with a soviet-style technocracy to centralize the economy to produce as they see fit. Production of goods and human reproduction are to be controlled by these "do gooders" through this secular ideology.

The secular ideology will create new economy based upon what they consider "sustainability" through the junk-science of the "global greens" and serve the "poor movements." There plan is to increase the numbers of poor through "free-market corruption and destruction" and false scientific studies of "ecologic theme." The focus on this story is to reduce the advantage of the western world to curry favor with Islamic radicals the "new Red Army " of the left that is one piercer movement that will slowly "bleed" western liberal democracy. The front-line ecology practitioners are politically isolated from the political intelligentsia purposefully, which provides funding and media coverage through the deception of the veil of neutrality. Dr. Mary Cummings is one of the front line activists that is simply put a "useful idiot." Check how she is funded and you will find the driving philosophy and money people behind the organization she is involved. Two of which are tax payer and foundation funded grants that are part of a corrupted system that allows the funded groups to pose as neutrally scientific and charitable based organizations. Nothing can be further from the truth!

Marines aren't that smart so having their aircraft fly themselves is probably a good thing
      • College Grad 4 mths ago
Why don't you have guts and have that discussion face to face with some Marines. See have much urine you can handle.
      • mistybearclaw 4 mths ago
Yes, your statement is dumb. I am a former female Marine, and can tell you that the Marine Corps is the hardest branch to get into. The Marines are highly selective about who they pick before they even go to basic. Half of of the ones who go to boot camp do not make it through, due to not making the cut. The Army handles all the Marine Corps rejects, maybe your one of them?

Doug is showing his ignorance and immaturity by letting his #$%$ speak lies his mouth knows are wrong.... and btw, U.S.M.C. vet here '71 to '75 and I bet I can still whoop your #$%$ in any field
