Have a Brilliant Idea? Be Quirky

When Ben Kaufman had an idea for an invention a few years ago, he ran into some trouble and realized that a great idea is not enough to get a product made.

The vast multi-disciplinary skills someone needs to turn an idea into something tangible is just beyond what most people are capable of.

A background in design, electrical engineering, marketing, fund raising and access to retailers and manufacturers are all required in order to get to the point where someone sees your product on the shelf and says, "what a great idea, I wish I thought of that" and buy one for themselves.

That's when Ben came up with Quirky, a company for people like him, who have good ideas but don't have the fleet of resources necessary to get them made.

what i did was file my patent, with the USPTO.GOV .first got my fileing date, then found very good attorneys,(registered attorneys) and let them take over from there, they use legal wording to describe the invention. if you have an idea that would be my recomendation

in fear of sounding ignorant... is that Patent attorneys? or business attorneys?
      • Anthony 4 mths ago
you need to hire a patent attorney... the typical cost for patent is around 12k-25k depending on the complexity of the patent and type ...
      • Anthony 4 mths ago
DSB... i have heard you can take the patent process in steps... that would allow a person to have minimal funds... can you provide details?

So companies like this can take your idea and just change it a tad bit..just a tad bit...and claim it is no longer your idea and not have to pay you or include you. You can complain and try to generate bad press, but the fact is they changed your idea just a tad bit...so it is no longer your idea. Not to mention the tons of folks who build your idea get a cut of the money. If you do get money, it is not going to be a lot. For something you came up with, you only get 10% royalties??? Are you kidding me??? Really. It is not going to be thousands of dollars a year that you get lol...
      • 'Great White'-Sha ... 4 mths ago
Actually, when I was researching whether to use them, I was told they do pay you up to 30% of the total Net Profits.
      • Bruce 4 mths ago
oh well if You were Told...it must be ok
      • Mindy 3 mths ago
Yes, it's 30%. For fronting no money, putting in no development, and simply submitting a few sentences describing a problem and maybe a simple sketch of how you might solve it that's not bad.

there is a local company here that gives prizes for invention ideas. My idea was not chosen, but guess what? its now in mass production. I was robbed with this same scam.
      • cuong 4 mths ago
what? you meant you don't have the money to get better lawyers than them.
      • Albert thomas Mallia jr 4 mths ago
Same to me read my blogs, even with a patent and lawyers, noncompete noe disclousers signed; meaningless fact lived it.......

Twenty seven years ago I got a patent 4474204 on a new type of hospital walker that helps people to stand up so that they are in a position to walk. I've never been able to sell it cause to get it on the market most companies wouldn't sell it unless it had Medicare approval. Medicare approval requires months and years of testing in different situations and with many different types of patients and costed tens of thousands of dollars which I couldn't afford. I'm sure that this type of walker would help many patients as one of my friends at the time was a physical therapist and she said it worked well in many situations. My mom had troubles standing up cause her stroke wouldn't allow her to stand. But, with my walker with a little practice she did fine.

Have had workable ideas for many years, but it takes money to make money and a nondisclosure clause means nothing anymore, if you don't have the patent you're screwed and it takes money to get the patent. I have been sitting on a workable BIG moneymaking idea for 25 years, but it will take about $100thousand in R&D. Once on the market it will be making at least 200 million the first year and it is self perpetuating from generation to generation. As I said, it takes money to make money!

I sent mine certified to myself. Detailed, witnessed and dated so no one could say they had it first.

Hey! Can I pay $10 to have my idea stolen too?
    • chris  •  Troy, Ohio  •  4 mths ago
      Its a scam !!!!

The Quikry Kids have confirmed extreme hype (along with 20 million venture captal) can carry the ball for a few years but what about long term. Despite numerous PR stunts and never ending publicity, such as the Sundance channel program and Moneyball reinventing the bicycle, they failed to generate sufficient interest (typically 1000 to 1,500 purchase committments) in a few dozen product designs. So much for their defunct social sales approach. The ill-fated presale program has been discontinued.

It appears Pivot Power is their claim to fame -- serving to underscore the influence of the hype factor -- given the fact it is overpriced and lacks features availble in similar products. Socket Sense is more functional while offering 33 percent savings. This side by side comparison illustrates the Quirky philosophy; take an existing product designed to accept bulky power converter (Socket Sense) and make it bendable and more costly. Hmmmmm.

Quirky isn't the first company who intended to tap the collective brain power of the garage inventor, but two (viable) products a week is clearly unrealistic, unless of course you are sipping the Quirky juice. Kaufman: We design two brand new products a week with help from people all around the world.

.. be very wary.. it's tough enough, even WITH a patent.! I have a few patents- my latest invention is already patented, & has a website.. & I recently saw it advertized, by someone else.. here on Yahoo, no less.! Now, I gotta sue for Patent Right Infringement.. a Loo,ooo, ong, process, made worse by the recent law introduced by Harry Reid, & signed in Sept.'11, by our Illustrious Leader, who is 'supposed' to be "pro small bid'nizz'..

So really people have to pay money to have their idea stolen or do they ever get anything for coming up with it?
    • Frank  •  4 mths ago
      I have a idea,opps forgot, can't tell you.
    • CraftyGirl  •  4 mths ago
I wish I had invented an easy way to get $10 from the masses.
    • Drackxman  •  Lebanon, Oregon  •  4 mths ago
Years ago I went through an invention company. All I did was waste a lot of money. They reallly don't help you, they just want your money. They don't even tell you if you are far enough along on an idea to make it worth their time to push it on industry.
They just want your money. I'd be very wary of this thing.
    • Erin Argast  •  4 mths ago
If you reveal your invention to others before you patent it, yuo give up the right to patent it. You can not patent, copyright, or trademark an 'idea'. Yo need a model, book, drawing, or such.

Beats Edison Nation, whos employees steal your ideas and hands them over to the government!
    • Malachi Constant  •  Seattle, Washington  •  4 mths ago
My invention would be to invent a way to extract great ideas from the public so I can copyright them myself. Wait. What? #$%$
