Never Worry About Focusing Your Camera Again

Inside an unassuming 8 ounce body, Lytro hides technology that a decade ago required a room full of cameras tethered to a supercomputer.

Lytro is a new camera that looks like it was designed to fool you. On the outside it looks like a toy with a simple rectangular body, but on the inside it's the first consumer camera that can capture the entire light field, which means it can capture all the light traveling at every point in space.

Capturing the entire light field with a pocket size camera was made possible by shrinking down that room full of cameras attached to a supercomputer into a paper thin light field sensor.

By capturing the entire light field, the Lytro enables you to take a picture without setting the focus before you take your picture. Instead you simply snap a photo, and adjust the focus when you get home.

Don't waste time focusing and worry more about capturing that picture of your kid before they stop smiling, and stop being cute.

I LIKE HOW THEY SHOW ME THE AD BUT NO VIDEO

If they have the technology to capture all the light and then focus on any individual area, why can't the final total image be made to be completely in focus everywhere in the field of view? Seems like this could be done with a computer application to extract the in focus light/image from each distance range and then combined into a final image.

It can, my guess is that they are withholding simple features in order to be able to charge for them later.

What you are talking about is "hyper-focal distance" and every camera/lens produced already does that. Your cellphone already does this... every box film camera already does this. The challenge is being able to isolate subjects from the background.. called shallow depth of field. But if you miss focus for any reason, this concept allows you to re-focus your image to a specific subject while maintaining the isolation.

I followed the production of this camera, did some user-testing, and was offered a first chance offer to buy one by the company, but I passed, not because of features but because of design. It's pictures and editing potential are excellent, but it's shape isn't user-friendly at all. What were they thinking?

my first thought was that it would be a fabulous security camera - now if its possible to do this in video it would be gobbled up,, as long as it comes with
        its own modify program.

I went ahead and bought it. Sure, it is a specialty camera. But, it definitely looks interesting and could produce some really interesting photos.

My guess is that it has to be that long to measure the light as vectors through space rather than points on a plane. Not that it won't get better, but right now I'd bet it's a technical issue.

for a little thing like that? yes I do think that's a lot! all it does is take a picture and focus it. might as well get a DSLR for another $300...

just because you can adjust the focus doesn't mean the person will know what to focus ON! understanding light and composition is everything, and all the gadgets in the world won't make up for a lack of ability in that regard. this camera will be popular for a while with snapshot shooters, not much more.

        Did it ever take skill?

This camera produces an estimated 1 megapixel image. It's estimated, because nowhere on the official website does it ever say how large these images are. Shocking.

This is a toy, nothing more. Expensive Toy. Only about 1MP and internal memory only... Requires special software. This will not be on my Xmas list - to give or receive.

One problem with this camera is you cant focus on both subjects front and rear together, its either front or rear subjects.

What about low-light conditions? I don't see a flash... Interesting thing though. I think I'll wait for the next generation. I'm sure it'll be that much better.
