A New Way to Treat Cancer

What if we could find out if a cancer drug is working or not almost instantly? Cancer patients could avoid the frustration of suffering through painful side effects and lost time only to learn that the treatment wasn't effective.

Professor Michael Cima and his team at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT may have come up with the answer. They're building on what is already the best practice for detecting cancer, which is the biopsy. Unfortunately, the information that is retrieved from a biopsy only tells the doctor what's happening with the tumor in the very moment that it's taken, like a photograph, and tumors are constantly changing and diversifying, especially during treatment.

In order to monitor the progress of a tumor doctors need a better tool - one that can monitor a tumor continuously. If a biopsy is equal to a photograph, Professor Cima is working on building a video camera.

His video camera comes in the form of a tiny implant that is so small it fits inside a biopsy needle. It is implanted in the tumor during a routine biopsy, which means it requires no extra procedure or treatment. Even though the implant is small enough to fit into a needle, there are thousands of tiny iron nanoparticles trapped inside like leaves in a tea bag. Its porous outer layer allows fluids to move in and out of the implant, and when cancer related molecules flow in, the iron nanoparticles cluster around it. The resulting clumps can be detected with a non invasive magnetic scan allowing doctors to monitor the tumor over time, letting them know the progress of a patient's treatment and providing doctors with a real-time snapshot of the tumor itself.

In my heart of hearts I hope this is truly good news for cancer patients and not bad news for the well being of everyone's future. Hopefully amazing, not terrifying.

Then you have no idea who these people are, or what their goals are. This is beyond dangerous, but why? Who is it? SubvertedNation/net has the answer.

any chance of not getting cancer as well as many many more diseases takes either super great resilience in your body or an extreme change in lifestyle and diet. avoiding chemical soaps, detergents, make-up, etc. and eating a super clean organic diet that includes plenty of all the necessary nutrients your body needs, as well as rigorous whole food supplementation. and getting sun is a must.
      • chris s 6 mths ago
        in my opinion. lol ^

whats funny is something like this would be considered a major life style change when it isnt the "life style" already

Wonder why all the research isn't get us a cure. Billions have been spent for research and little progress has been made. I am somewhat bitter since my yyoungest son died of cancer.
      • SatanD 6 mths ago
No progress has been made? What an ignorant comment. Many cancers are no longer a death sentence due to the billions of dollars spent. Hundreds of treatment options have been developed that not only extend life, but help quality of life. I am sorry for your loss but the field is actually moving quite rapidly and should not be measured by the lack of a Holy Grail cure. Furthermore, as the era of personalized medicine approaches it will only get significantly better.

katkat... Stop posting and go put on your tin foil hat.
Ergo. Cancer is a tough disease to treat. Many advancements have been made and we've learned a lot about how cancer works.

My mom has cancer for the second time. She's taking a pill that's suppose to shrink her tumor, but it takes months to even find out if it is working or not. This would help, although I think it would be more beneficial to find CURES for cancer instead of tracking the process if the treatment is effective. I just saw a video wear Hemp oil is actually effective and has been saying lives for people who had terminal cancer. Why can't this come into affect? Oh right, because it's illegal...

If this actully works, it would be amazing in the fight against cancer. For those complaining about working on a cure, instead of "just another tool to treat", let's just be grateful for each and every single thing that helps save those fighting cancer. BTW, I'm a 7 yr survivor and have lost 4 immed. family members to cancer.

Can we please do some research that we can trust to see if THC really does attack cancer cells? I'd like to see funding for reasearch to CURE not treat.

People talk about conspiracys and such but do they think how they wud feel if they were going through the treatments and this was offered to them? we always complain about needing a cure for this or for that but yet when new help is developed we knock it down with conspriacy this and conspriacy that maybe those people are conspireing but we over look the possibility of the good that can come from what we mock.

you know the reason why you get cancer is because of abnormal cells. the body will give it more nutrients to them to help them while saping nutrients from the other normal cells. the abnormal cells then start to kill the person because there not doing what there ment to do right.
in order to solve this you need to let the mind know that those cells are cancer cells. if they want a cure for cancer they should make a medicin that will help the brain know that it has cancer in a certain place then it has to let the body know to send stem cells to that area of the body so that it can heal.

if a sophmore high school student can imagen this then why dont they actually do it? oh wait, they dont do it because of money. because of money which is only ment to serve as a for of trade, it is now killing people. people are to greedy and dont want to waste money een when they know it could save the lifes of thousands of people.
i just hope that our generation will be able to change that.

i think those who say they'd rather have cancer, don't have cancer! when you are screaming in pain and hoping to die or get an implant that might relieve the pain, i think you'll take the implant! there are places for sarcasm and negativity; serious health care isn't one of them.
