The White House appears to be taking the president's "charm offensive" effort to heart.

It's rare to see White House officials in the White House press workspace, let alone offering sugary treats and compliments. But that's how Tuesday began for reporters camped out in the press area.

"Thank you for all that you do," White House chief of staff Denis McDonough told reporters in the press basement as he waved two large boxes of sprinkled, iced and glazed Dunkin' Donuts treats. "Take another," he said as he made a second pass by stunned members of the press.

A reporter asked when McDonough had last visited the windowless basement area, and he conceded it had been quite some time.

McDonough was trailed by press secretary Jay Carney, whose appearance was equally rare.

As the sugar settled, ever-questioning members of the Fourth Estate began to wonder what they should brace for next...

    • Mark Sanford used a picture of Nancy Pelosi as a stand-in for his opponent. (Richard Ellis/Getty Images)

CHARLESTON, S.C.—With a saga like Mark Sanford's, it is difficult to determine where to begin.

If you're just now joining us for Sanford's long road to redemption tour, let's start at the beginning and warp-speed to now.

Sanford was once the popular Republican governor of South Carolina who in 2009 mysteriously disappeared from the state to rendezvous with an Argentine mistress. Sanford remained the state's chief executive even after the affair was made public. He ultimately pledged his love for the Argentine woman, divorced his wife, served out his term and retreated to a remote family farm in South Carolina. He emerged back into public life last year by announcing that he would run for the congressional seat that opened up after Tim Scott was appointed to the U.S. Senate. After defeating 15 other Republican contenders in a primary earlier this spring, Sanford became the party nominee and began campaigning against Democratic businesswoman Elizabeth Colbert Busch, none other than the

    • The Heart of Chechnya mosque in the Chechen capital Grozny (Maxim Shemetov/Reuters)Six months after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, just 25 percent of Americans said Islam is more likely to encourage violence than other religions. That number has climbed to 42 percent, according to a new poll released Tuesday by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center.

The survey, conducted after the Boston bombings, found that opinions have not changed much as a result of those attacks. In March, 40 percent of Americans said Islam is more violent, 42 percent disagreed.

In the newly released poll, 46 percent of Americans disagree, Pew reported. And there are vast partisan gaps: 62 percent of Republicans say that Islam encourages more violence, compared with 39 percent of independents and 29 percent of Democrats. (The gap grows with partisan differences: 69 percent of self-described conservative Republicans say it does, 71 percent of professed liberal Democrats disagree.)
