Barney Frank backs Markey for Senate in Massachusetts

Democratic former Rep. Barney Frank on Thursday put an end to talk of his potential appointment as Massachusetts' interim U.S. senator and publicly offered support for Democratic Rep. Ed Markey.

"I would also want to endorse your view that Ed Markey should be and will be the next senator" from Massachusetts, Frank told host Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC's "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell."

He made similar statements on Thursday to Boston NPR affiliate WBUR.

“He was a leader in gun control when we were in the legislature together in the 1970s,” Frank said of Markey during an interview with WBUR. “And he has since that time been a very important leader, one of the national leaders, on the whole question of climate change.”

Frank recently revealed he had asked Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick to appoint him to temporarily succeed Sen. John Kerry, who has been nominated to serve as secretary of state. But Democrats had already public coalesced around Markey for the appointment.
