Christine O’Donnell weighs in on Obama tax cut package

Republican leaders in Congress may face a struggle rallying their most conservative caucus members to support the compromise they reached with President Obama over tax cuts. And now the main sticking point -- the renewal of long-term unemployment benefits for 2 million Americans -- is ruffling the feathers of at least one tea party star who isn't in Congress.

No, we don't mean Sarah Palin -- though she, too, has been indicating, in the cramped quarters of her Twitter account, that she rejects the tax cut deal. Senate GOP also-ran Christine O'Donnell (remember her?) weighed in Tuesday, comparing the deal to one the bloodiest days in American history and the death of a political spouse.

"Tragedy comes in threes," O'Donnell said. "Pearl Harbor, Elizabeth Edwards' passing and Barack Obama's announcement of extending the tax cuts, which is good, but also extending the unemployment benefits."

Later in the day, O'Donnell walked back any suggestion that she'd likened the extension of out-of-work Americans' payments to a tragedy: "That's not what I meant at all," O'Donnell said.

We'll leave it to others to determine exactly what she did mean.
