What to watch for Monday in politics

It's budget day in Washington.

That means President Obama will send his budget proposal for fiscal year 2013 to Congress. It also means federal departments and agencies across Washington will hold briefing after briefing after briefing on the details, Republicans — including the GOP presidential hopefuls -- will issue statement after statement after statement declaring the proposal another Obama plan that calls for too much spending and too little cutting, and journalists will write story after story after story trying to explain what it all means.

Obama himself will head to Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Va., to deliver remarks to students at 11 a.m. EST on the merits of his proposal. The only certain outcome is that his budget blueprint will trigger debates that will last until the Nov. 6 election day.

Out on the Republican campaign trail, Mitt Romney, who won the Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll on Saturday and the Maine caucus that evening, will be in Mesa, Ariz., on Monday for a 5:45 p.m. MST rally. Arizona and Michigan will hold primaries Feb. 28.

Rick Santorum, who outdid Romney in a national poll released Saturday, will be in Tacoma, Wash., for a campaign event at 7 p.m. PST, and Newt Gingrich will be further south on the West Coast on Monday for an event at 3 p.m. PST in South El Monte, Calif., followed by a 5 p.m. PST gathering in Pasadena. Details of Ron Paul's plans were not available, but Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson has an online town hall planned with Boston University Economics Department Chairman Jeff Miron at 7 p.m. MST.

And then there is this: On this day in 2007, Romney launched his first run for the White House.
