    Weekend in politics: Obama in Va. and Wis.; Romney in Nev. and Colo., and more

    It's the weekend, but that doesn't mean much if you're running for president. There's no time for rest and relaxation at this point in the campaign.

    President Barack Obama will campaign in Virginia on Friday, and he'll speak via satellite at the AARP National Event & Expo in New Orleans. On Saturday, he'll head to Wisconsin. Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, will spend Friday and Saturday politicking in New Hampshire.

    Mitt Romney, who is stepping up his campaign schedule, will be in Nevada on Friday and Colorado on Sunday. Running mate Paul Ryan will speak Friday at the AARP gathering and stump in Florida on Saturday.

    Romney has his work cut out for him. He is tight on campaign cash and trailing in many battleground state polls. (There should be a campaign against journalists saying "key" battleground states. If it's a "battleground" state, isn't it a "key" state? And vice versa.)

    Also worth noting this weekend: Michelle Obama attends fundraisers in Maryland on Friday and in New Jersey on Sunday; Ann Romney attends a fundraiser Friday in Nebraska, while son Josh will be campaigning in Pennsylvania and son Craig in Florida.

    Then, to cap off the weekend, Obama and Romney appear Sunday evening on CBS' "60 Minutes." Obama talks to Steve Kroft, Romney to Scott Pelly.

    And then there is this: Sunday marks the 60th anniversary of Richard Nixon going on TV to deliver what came to be known as the "Checkers" speech.  He wanted to refute allegations of improper campaign financing and disabuse everybody of the notion that he might be dishonest or a crook.  "Checkers" refers to the name of a dog given to him as a gift, which Nixon said he would keep because his children had become attached to it.

    Coming Monday: The Romney-Ryan team begins a three-day bus tour in Ohio titled "Romney Plan For A Stronger Middle Class." President Obama will travel to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, and he and the first lady will tape their appearance on ABC's "The View" for broadcast on Tuesday.
