Abercrombie and Fitch Shuns ‘The Situation,’ Drug Companies Shut Down Facebook Pages, and a Device That Mutes Celebrities On TV

"Jersey Shore" star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino may become one of the first celebrities who is paid not to endorse a brand. In a statement, clothing manufacturer Abercrombie & Fitch asked the Situation to stop wearing its shirts on-air.

"We are deeply concerned that Mr. Sorrentino's association with our brand could cause significant damage to our image. We understand that the show is for entertainment purposes, but believe this association is contrary to the aspirational nature of our brand, and may be distressing to many of our fans. We have therefore offered a substantial payment to Michael 'The Situation' Sorrentino and the producers of MTV's The Jersey Shore to have the character wear an alternate brand. We have also extended this offer to other members of the cast, and are urgently waiting a response."

Despite those strong words, Abercrombie & Fitch wasn't always so anti-Sitch. In 2010 after the first season of "Jersey Shore," the company profited from the show. It sold show-inspired shirts (one of the most popular ones read "the Fitchuation"). We tried to reach A&F on Wednesday morning to see why it had a change of heart, but it wasn't available for comment. What do you think of A&F's love-hate relationship with "The Situation"? Tell me on Facebook/AdrianaDiazNews and Twitter @AdrianaTweeting!

Some pharmaceutical companies are shutting down their Facebook pages. This comes after Facebook reversed a policy that allowed drug companies to disable public comments on their Facebook walls. With the exception of pages pertaining to specific prescription drugs, pages focused on pharma companies and diseases must allow users to comment. A Facebook spokesman said the change was made to "encourage an authentic dialogue." Although companies can delete specific comments once they're posted, a number of drugmakers, like Johnson & Johnson, Bayer, and AstraZeneca, have still decided to delete many of their Facebook pages. Companies are reportedly concerned that comments might focus on the negative side effects of their products or promote inappropriate usage, which could raise flags to federal regulators.

Have you heard enough about Kim Kardashian and Charlie Sheen? A New York City man has, too, and is taking matters into his own hands. Matt Richardson created the "Enough Already" device, which mutes the TV when certain forbidden keywords come up (like "Kardashian" or "Sheen," for example). It uses a mechanism called an Arduino circuit board to monitor the closed captioning of programs. If it comes across a forbidden word, the device will trigger at least 30 seconds of silence. Watch Richardson explain his device in this YouTube video. People love the concept on social media. One person tweeted, "whoever figured this out is my new hero."

"The Situation" is a huge joke. I dont even know why we are talking about him.
And as far as the drug companies are concern... Shouldnt Americans have full disclosure of any harmful side affects? Who better to inform the public but those who have used the drug. Worried that federal regulators will do their job and protect the public? Geez, we wouldnt want that now, would we. That means the drug companies would have to make sure they are not poisoning us...

Why on earth would these gutter trash ever be allowed on TV in the first place?

      USELESS #$%$ HEAD.!!
    • DavidB  •  9 mths ago
That's funny that the drug companies just wanted more filtration to make their products look better than they were and not point out the side effects. Typical and hilarious. ;-)
I can't blame them for just removing their profiles with the percentage of people that have experienced the side effects... they don't typically like pointing out those numbers. LOL!

Why is Jersey Shore even on? These nobodies are making money being untalented nobodies...A & F has it right

        haters gonna hate
      • Cameron B 9 mths ago
Its not hating, its actual facts. None of them have any marketable talents beside being able to create drama out of this air. Thats it.
      • KainPhoenix 9 mths ago
What Mark and Cameron fail to realize is that these people do have marketable talents. In that, they bring in millions of advertising dollars to places like MTV. Their talents may not be intellect, common sense, or hard work, but it's a demonstrable fact that they draw people to TV shows and to brand names. The reason for why they can do this doesn't really matter; they're still marketable for whatever reason.

They don't get paid just because they're "cool" or popular, but because they bring in ad revenue.

When I was a teen, people like the Jersy shore cround would have been tagged "SLUTS" and in NO way would they be offered a TV show, much less money from a big retailer no matter what it was for.

Yep, the past few generations have been pathetic losers of epic proportions. Bam Margera, Kim K, etc.

I agree and I have always thought of Abercrombie as an upper middle class brand name. My sons have always liked that brand. However, if it ever gets the stigma of that Jersey Shore white trash they would never wear it again.

The roast of donald trump says it all, what a douch. With that said who cares what he wears nobody watching.
      • mungumbo 9 mths ago
Thats the first time I saw that #$%$ wipe, and he thinks he is gods gift to women. He should go away and stop listening to the people that hang all over this pig and stop pumping up his head for a paycheck.
      • Otherguy89 9 mths ago
Unfortunately, since they keep bringing the show back, there are idiots out there that ARE watching.
    • Ratacon  •  9 mths ago
That's embarrassing that a company calls you. And then ask you to please stop wearing their clothes cause you making them look bad.................lol.............We definitely have a "Situation."
    • Daniel  •  9 mths ago
One more thing: the pharmaceutical companies "are reportedly concerned that comments might focus on negative side effects of their products or promote inappropriate uses, which could raise flags to federal regulators." So basically, they're worried that people might reveal that they're selling poison.
    • Connie  •  9 mths ago
WTF! The last I heard we live in the land of the free... free to wear what ever we want to!! Abercrombie & Fitch you just made one stupid mistake! If you ask me "The Situation" made your clothes look good and made people want to buy them!! If I was him I'd tell Abercrombie & Fitch exactly where they can stick their clothes and I'd take their money and come out with my own clothing line!

Yeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh, I saw my first 20 seconds of Jersey Shore a few days ago (10 seconds plus the intro/theme song/whatever the part where they show the characters is called). Needless to say, it was retarded. It started out with snooki (SNOOKI WANT SMOOSH-SMOOSH!!) going into some place to get her picture taken to go to italy, and she said: "Italy is that big country- no, actually Europe is that big country, and it's got Britain and (country I don't remember) inside of it!" Apparently, Europe is now a country, and Italy is now a state. But whatever, it's not real anyway.
    • LB  •  9 mths ago
A n F looking for publicity on the heels of jersey shore italy. Pathetic, cheap publicity.

Q: Why does New Jersey have "The Situation" and California have homosexuals?
      A: California got first pick.
    • DUMBERER67!  •  9 mths ago
when is his 15 mins. up. would you want this douche to represent you-the only ones that think he is cool must be in the tri-state area
    • Vince  •  9 mths ago
Unless you're still in high school you can easily live without Abercrombie & Fitch.
    • Fab  •  9 mths ago
I think this is a publicity stunt to benefit Abercrombie & Fitch.
I say watch the stupid show and don't buy anything from Abercrombie & Fitch.
