Too sexy for Times Square? The naked ladies debate.

Too sexy for Times Square? The naked ladies debate.

People are talking about boobs — nipples, to be exact. The #freethenipple campaign has garnered support from celebrities, including Chrissy Teigen, Miley Cyrus, Liv Tyler and Lena Dunham.

And in New York City’s Times Square, the desnudas, Spanish for “the naked ladies,” are caught in the debate.

These women are the newest addition to the cast of characters that pose for photos in Times Square. For about a $10 tip, you can take a souvenir picture with the women, who are completely nude except for a thong and some patriotic paint. The desnudas say they earn about $300 day.

Officially, it’s legal for women to be topless wherever it’s legal for men to be topless in New York state, along with Hawaii, Maine, Ohio and Texas.

But New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is not a fan. He says there is no room for nudity in Times Square.
In a press conference on Aug 18, he said, “It’s wrong, it’s wrong. It’s just — look I, as a progressive who believes in civil liberties and believes in our First Amendment.  I understand the legal challenge here. But I don't think that's the end of the discussion."

The mayor recently convened a special task force to find a way to kick the ladies and their handlers out of Times Square.

On August 23rd, more than 300 topless women participated in the annual GoTopless Day parade from Columbus Circle to Bryant Park in New York City. The event was held in 60 cities total.

A similar character, the Naked Cowboy, has been baring his chest since 1998, and he is now seen as a New York icon. He even ran for mayor in 2009.

The Naked Cowboy was recently spotted wearing a bikini top to “voice” his opinion on the issues regarding the desnudas.

Various celebrities have also weighed in on what they consider a double standard in male and female toplessness. The protest is being called the “topless equality movement.”

In November 2014, Chelsea Handler re-created Vladimir Putin’s infamous topless horse-riding picture. Instagram removed the image in just 30 minutes.

Handler was quick to point of out what she considers hypocrisy by posting “If a man posts a picture of his nipples, it’s OK, but not a woman? Are we in 1825?”

Other celebs, including Chrissy Teigen, Miley Cyrus, Liv Tyler and Lena Dunham have shown their support for what has become the viral #freethenipple campaign.

We hope to get to the naked truth.
