Nickelback Haters Get a Taste of Their Own Medicine on Twitter

At the end of last year, people were petitioning to have the Canadian rock band Nickelback replaced as the headlining performance at the Detroit Lions vs. the Green Bay Packers Thanksgiving Day game. The petition received more than 50,000 signatures, but Nickelback still performed. That is not the only time that people have had bad things to say about the mainstream rock band. People have taken to Twitter to express their disdain with the band. The difference now is that the band or whoever runs the band's Twitter account is replying to the negative comments. One person tweeted "You ruin my day when I hear your music." Nickelback replied, "How else could we cause you so much torment? So worth it." When another person tweeted, "Nickelback makes me want to chop my ears off," the band responded "Did you do it yet? What's the hold-up?" And there are literally dozens more exchanges like this. Even "American Idol" alumnus Daughtry got in on it, replying to Nickelback and calling it "hilarious." The band currently has more than 140,000 followers on Twitter.

Now from a band that's using Twitter to fire back at its critics to a company using Twitter to generate good publicity from its fans.

So McDonald's decided to interact with its customers on Twitter, but the plan backfired -- badly. In a promotional campaign, McDonald's used #McDStories and #MeetTheFarmers hoping to have people reply with their positive McDonald's experiences. However, the campaign did not go as planned. In fact, people responded with some snarky comments and stories of their bad experiences. One person tweeted about his brother allegedly finding a fingernail in his fries. Another person tweeted about not liking the food, saying, "More than half a year since last McTerrible McFattening McMeal. I don't McMiss the McFood McOne McBit." Within two hours, McDonald's pulled the hashtag. You would think that McDonald's would have learned from other company's mishaps with hashtags before starting its own campaign. The Australian airline tried to use #QantasLuxury, but people responded with their horrible flying experiences. Kraft also tried to promote its Macaroni & Cheese on Twitter, and it became a trending topic when people accused Kraft of using bovine growth hormone in its cheese. Definitely not the kind of publicity either company was anticipating.

As much as they've softened up in the last few years compared to how they used to sound, if you've ever seen them live you know they put on one HELL of a live rock show & they interact with the audience which is something you barely see anymore & I know from personal experience; I, along with 6 other people got pulled up on stage at one of their hometown shows a couple years back as part of an impromptu challenge Chad posed to the audience to see if anyone in attendance could pound a beer faster than their drummer. Call it whatever you want, but they love their fans & that was one of the coolest things I've ever gotten to do. Plus they're friends with Dimebag Darrell Abbot (R.I.P) & Jerry Cantrell & that's A OK in my books.

If the people tweeting about Nickelback could only channel that energy to the Kardashians, maybe I wouldn't have to still see these twits on magazine covers, Yahoo and TV.
      • Ghostwriter 4 mths ago
lol, now the Kardashians are someone I could get behind a petition to ban from the airwaves. Nickelback is musical confection compared to all the "news" about Kim's "devastating" divorce of (what was it, two months?)

Wow, when Yahoo writes a story about the K, people say "who cares' and 'we're sick of hearing about them". Then, when they don't write about them, someone ALWAYS brings them up. I guess they really do matter..... weird.
      • SirLaffalot 4 mths ago
they don't matter but have to give them props for becoming worldwide? celebrities just for being the children of a guy who defended a murderer

Quick Survey! Thumbs UP if you DON'T have twitter and plan on keeping it that way. Thumbs DOWN if you DO have a twitter account or dream of the day where you can become a tweeter.

I don't like Nickelback so I decided to do something that no one else thought of- I stopped listening to them. Some people who express this intense hatred for Nickelback on the internet need to follow my plan as well. No one is forcing you to listen to Nickelback. No need to harass them on twitter.
      • joe 4 mths ago
you are very wrong. anyone who works on any kind of construction site will tell you that when the local rock station is on, nickleback is on HEAVY rotation. half the workers dont mind it, the other half hate hearing the same thing over and over again. they are forced to listen to crap on repeat.
      • Jeff 4 mths ago
I don't listen to them either. Aside from the unavoidable snippet on the radio or my very rare attendance at the house-party-thrown-by-tasteless-rednecks type of event , I manage not to hear their crap, either. That doesn't stop me from declaring to anyone who will listen that they're a wretched pos band with no talent. Ya know why? Because they suck so much that they deserve to be harassed and tormented because of it. Every day. Stop sucking and people will stop telling you that you suck. Easy fix.

What is the big deal!?! There are many groups that I do not like but I do not waste time ragging on them.
      • Johnny Lee 4 mths ago
But you waste time posting about it on the Yahoo?

It's all in good fun. Really. Nobody's getting hurt. Well, maybe a little butthurt.

Seeing as how I don't have a twitter, none of this makes sense to me. I literally heard someone say "hashtag" the other day in a sentence before saying an adjective. I was stunned.

If a company is going to fish for free support then they should make sure that they are selling a good product first -.-

Y'know, I really can't get why there is all this hate surrounding Nickelback. They're not the best band in the world but they're not the worst. Do they kick puppies after concerts or what?
    • thorx  •  4 mths ago

    • Darius  •  Jetersville, Virginia  •  4 mths ago
Twitter is so stupid. It's nothing but a glorified Facebook status update.
    • Jason  •  4 mths ago
The anonymous nature of the internet has created an incredible false sense of bravado in everyone. It's done nothing but give an angry little voice to jealous people who have nothing better to do with their time but put down the success of others. Step away from the keyboard and try going out and actually having a decent civilized conversation with somebody...if you can.

not a huge fan but I did like some of their earlier stuff and being a musician I can respect them for putting there music out there and so far doing well at it. I am much happier seeing some guys actually playing their own instruments and writing there own songs other than these pop gods who simply pick songs already wrote. Most of the people who have time to dicredit them are the same ones who tune in too crap like Kim and her amazing life...Let them make the music they want and if its not for you then move on and be happy about it. Quit hating on somebody you dont actually know.
