Web Not Happy About New Line of Lego for Girls

The toy giant Lego is coming out with a new line of toys for girls. The Danish plastic toy maker announced the "Lego Friends" line geared toward girls ages 5 and up. People on Twitter are lashing out at Lego for creating a line that looks so stereotypically feminine -- especially the mostly pink color of the toys. One person tweeted, "Girls can like a toy without it being pink." Lego CEO Jørgen Vig Knudstorp notes "this is the most significant strategic launch we've done in a decade." And in order to avoid the holiday competition, the line will roll out on January 1, 2012. This isn't the first time a toy company released a female version of a popular classic. In 1957 Lionel came out with a pastel train set called "Lady Lionel."

For our second story, one Wisconsin mayor has found an enemy in one teen and his Twitter account. Last month, 18-year-old Asher Heimermann launched a parody Twitter account of Sheboygan Mayor Bob Ryan. The account, @MayorBobRyan, was started after the mayor was involved in several alcohol-related incidents. It's full of joke tweets such as "I'm off to rehab for the sixth time in three years." As you might imagine, Ryan is not happy. He sent a cease-and-desist letter to Heimermann, claiming that the account is identity theft. But, the Wisconsin teen refuses to go quietly. Not only will Heimermann not close the account, he's also now running against the mayor in the upcoming Sheboygan election. He even set up a campaign webpage (AsherHeimermann.org), and he actually has a plan! He wants to expand public transit, create living wages, and privatize the senior activity center. But Heimermann's back-up plan if he doesn't get elected is to study business at the University of Wisconsin.

Why leave the girls out? Include them in as well and let them have their pink leggos too!

I loved Legos as a kid, but what is wrong with creating pink and purple legos to appeal to little girls? There is nothing wrong with a girl who likes girl things.

Meanwhile, the color blind are chuckling at all this

OMG...I guess I'd better take these Star Wars Legos away from my eleven year old stepson. They are in dark colors and are geared toward boys... Don't want him to become confused and think he's a boy.

Nobody is making anyone buy pink legos, are you all crazy?? Why don't you put efforts intothe real important issues this country is facing?? Drunk Mayors, Senators writing laws that make America a battleground situation, doing away with due process, the world is in a #$%$ and you all are worried about pink legos, Really?
    • Volar  •  Chicago, Illinois  •  4 mths ago
This isn't new for Lego. They made girl lines in the past, most specifically Belville and Clikits.

Pink legos for girls how horrible? What #$%$ wrote this?
    • Jhade  •  Cincinnati, United States  •  5 mths ago
Ok so whats the problem? Pink is a very popular color amongst most young girls. It is called marketing to a select market. Maybe these are for the girls who want to be able to tell their toys from the brothers... Or maybe for the billion Barbie fans? My girls play with cars and trucks when they want to and my sons have been known to play "daddy" with baby dolls. Maybe the problem is that people just need something to complain about? This is a simple solution you don't want your little girl playing with pink things don't get her any... or is that asking parents to be responsible?
      • Chris G 5 mths ago
Seriously, have the people complaining about this ever been in a Toys R Us? There's always an entire section of the store that's pink, for girls toys.
      • Anthony 5 mths ago
Totally agree! Critics are acting like this is the first company ever to introduce a girl toy that is pink or purple lol.
      • gwawr 5 mths ago
Not all girls like pink. I didn't when I was a little girl. I didn't want anything pink.

I think it's great. Girls ARE stereotypically feminine, at least I would hope so. if parents don't want their girls to have pink legos, DON'T BUY THEM!! I get so amused at what people will "protest" about. Seriously folks, there are so many more injustices in the world to put your energy into.

I work at a LEGO store and i cant tell you how many moms have called me/the store sexist because we dont have 'these' kinds of pink LEGO.
      • Darth Piette 5 mths ago
I worked at the Lego store in Minnesota for almost a year and that was a constant inquiry. The only complaints I'm seeing around the Lego fan sites is that they don't like the figures. I also got the "sexist" remark quite a few times.
At the same time, I agree that you don't need pink and purple colors to appeal to girls. One of my co-workers daughters loves dragons, reptiles, and dinosaurs.
      • BR 5 mths ago
Any mother that insists on wanting pink toys is raising a Paris HIlton/Kim Kardashian/Real Housewives wannabe. Disgusting! I loved LEGOs growing up and I'm a girl who works with computers, HATES pink and the dumbing down girls are constantly subjected to.
      • MARK 5 mths ago
BR I hope the color of the toy isn't the main reason why parents are buying it but rather the content. Many of the Lego items available at your local toy store are sci-fi/war related traditionally seen as "boy toys." The good old houses, spaceships, airplanes, trucks, etc. are hard to find. It is very discouraging for a little girl with a gift card to walk into Toys R Us and only find sci-fi/war legos.

O get a life. Should we start selling androgenous he/she legos? Is it incorrect now to distinguish between the sexes? What the hell is wrong with people? How many men have you seen wearing pink clothes with a flowers on them? Grow up.
      • Jen Ritter 5 mths ago
point being,..it's insulting and sexist to make everything for girls and distinguishing it by making it PINK...i have a daughter and yes i dress her in pink and purple but also blue and green...there doesnt need to be a product just for girls.
      • Nikki Nicholson 5 mths ago
So, are you saying that Barbie is sexist? It's a product geared toward girls. Should Tonka remove their trucks for being "boy' toys? PLEASE...It doesn't hurt to have products made for a specific gender.
      • Jannik A 5 mths ago
Well, according to George Washington and the fighters of the American Revolution, pink was a color for men. That's why it was used as a rank insignia color for officer uniforms. Maybe we should go back to that tradition.

People need to relax....if you don't like it don't buy it!

The main problem with the new line of Lego for girls is that hardly any construction ability is needed. In a way they are suggesting that only boys enjoy the challenge of building. It's quite patronising to girls living in this modern world, where gender equality is of paramount importance, and where increasing numbers of females occupy traditional male roles in the workplace. (Including the construction industry) It's strange because LEGO is Danish, and Scandinavians have always had a reputation for being progressive and modern in their outlook. As for the whole 'pink' thing, yes, it's true that many girls prefer pink over some other colors, but that could be because they have been conditioned to think this way. And boys have been conditioned NOT to like pink!
    • A Yahoo! User  •  New York, United States  •  5 mths ago
While I do believe that this is a blatant attempt at trying to target the taste of young girls, I see nothing wrong with it. Many people think that society dictates children's thoughts including color preference etc. - I think this is true to an extent; however, I can attest to the fact that young girls love shades of pinks, reds and purples - it's in their nature. It is not a coincidence that barbie, Bratz and many other girl toys are marketed in pink boxes. Also in girls' clothing, pink is very popular - that's a color that little girls like!
      • NotPenny'sBoat 5 mths ago
Actually, this is a misconception made my many, many people. At least in Western cultures. We are enculturated to think that girls like pink and boys like blue. (Along with thousands of other "gender-specific" things) But there is nothing inherent in anyone's "nature" based on their gender, that would make them prefer a certain color. Our culture just says girls like pink.
      • NotPenny'sBoat 5 mths ago
        by* not my.
      • Smoking pot with robocop 5 mths ago
Unfortunately, there needs to be color coding because it helps parents tell which toy is aimed at which gender. People still can't stomach seeing a little boy in pink even when he (supposedly) likes it. The sheeple are programmed to think girls like pink and boys like blue.
    • Static Nomad  •  Morrow, Georgia  •  5 mths ago
Lol you gotta be kidding me. If you're against the pink and "stereotypes", then just by regular Legos. My #$%$ word, people. Get over your feminist selves.
    • Crell  •  Logan, United States  •  5 mths ago
I think it's ridiculous that everybody's upset that a few of the blocks in this set happen to be pink. Did no one notice what the girl's holding, her 'pet', the blackboard, or all the rest of the tools in the background? This girl's a ROCKING SCIENTIST! We should be CELEBRATING this new Lego set! Way to go, Lego!
    • Chelsea  •  Fort Mill, United States  •  5 mths ago
If LEGOS originally only came in pink, you wouldn't want your little boy playing with them. So why can't they make pink or "girl friendly" designs w/out being critiqued? And for the person who made the comment about not every girl liking pink, not every boy likes the colors they already come in. This whole thing is just silly to be getting so much attn.
    • Princess Rita  •  Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania  •  5 mths ago
That's really awesome......Pink is fine and good people who have problems don't have to buy it! It's time for the girls to have things like that off their own instead of playing with unisex colors! I for one will be buying it for my daughter.......
