NYC Photographer Makes Ordinary Life Look Extraordinary Through the Eyes of Dancers

Trending Now

New York City photographer Jordan Matter has made everyday life appear wondrous. How did he do it? Matter transformed ordinary life activities such as crossing the street and shoveling snow into artistic experiences using dancers as his muses and subjects. Matter photographed dancers from coast to coast -- New York City to California -- and included the images in his book "Dancers Among Us: A Celebration of Joy in the Everyday."

The pictures are simply stunning. Each dancer's grace, elegance, and body control are captured in the images. In fact, the movements in some of the pictures look almost effortless. One of the most captivating images is of a dancer leaping across a train track as a locomotive approaches in the distance. Sometimes the reactions of unsuspecting strangers near the dancers are unintentionally humorous. In one photograph taken inside the New York Public Library, titled "Deep in Thought," a dancer's legs are propped up on a shelf as she balances her head and arms in a book. The older man seated next to her appears unfazed and completely engaged in the material he is reading.

To debunk any allegations that the images are fake or digitally edited or enhanced, Matter displays a video on Vimeo showing just how he got the impressive shots. In addition, Matter writes, "there is no Photoshopping here, no trampolines, no gimmicks, no tricks -- just a photographer, his vision, and the serendipity of what happens when the shutter clicks."
