Photo Calling for Peace in Israel and Gaza Goes Viral

As the fighting between Israel and Palestine continues, people all over the world are hoping for a cease-fire and for peace in Gaza. In acknowledgement of this wish for a truce, two men of different religious faiths made a public plea as they stood together holding signs in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday.

One man's sign reads, "I'm Jewish and I'm from Israel." The other man holds a cardboard sign as well, but his reads, "I'm Muslim and I'm from Palestine." Together, they hold a sign in the middle that reads, "Why can't we all just get along?" Their poignant request, which was first publicly uttered by Rodney King in 1991, after riots broke out in Los Angeles following the acquittal of police officers charged with brutally beating King. More than two decades have passed since King made his statement, and his words continue to resonate.

Now, the photograph of the two men has gone viral. After it was shared on the Facebook page of the nonprofit youth organization Do Something with the caption "couldn't say it better ourselves." The post has been liked more than 18,000 times, and comments are filled with people who love and agree with their message. One person wrote, "I love these guys. Refuse to buy into the hate." Another person added, "It's about more than just tolerance. Accept and embrace." Yet there were those who felt that the picture would do little to help with the conflict in Gaza. One person's comment read, simply, "not as simple as that."

The photo spreads awareness that there are people from both sides who want peace. Here's hoping that more images like this will make people realize how similar we all are, and maybe contribute to the future peace in the region.
