Physicist Invents Machine to Separate Cream from Cookie in Oreos

The Oreo is undoubtedly one of the most famous cookies around. Whether you are a fan of the original, the Double Stuf, or one of the numerous seasonal varieties, you may have faced a problem many other people deal with -- liking the cookie more than the 'creme' or vice versa. Physicist and copywriter David Neevel is a fan of the Oreo, but only the cookie part. He said his machine is "entirely based on the dislike for creme and preference for cookie." So he came up with a way to separate the two, and there is video proof.

"It was a big time commitment to build the machine. I had to work some long hours," he said. In addition, Neevel said, he did not get to see his girlfriend or his dog while working on his project. In a garage in Portland, Oregon, Neevel built what he calls his OSM (Oreo Separator Machine) using a hatchet, wood, floss, aluminum, and wires. Neevel said one of the hardest things to overcome was learning how to build robots and make them work, and he struggled with staying warm.

In his video about the project, Neevel says that he does not have a catch phrase for the machine yet, but if he had to come up with one he would consider, "Let's get that creme out of there" or "This creme's no good; get it off the cookies." At the end of his video, when Neevel's invention proves to be a success, he devours the creme-free cookies and says, "All right, two clean, delicious Oreos."

Neevel's video has been viewed more than 230,000 times on YouTube so far. People are leaving all sorts of comments. One person wrote, "I'm not sure what's weirder, the fact he built this thing or that he hates the cream." Another person seems to think Neevel's invention is totally legit, writing, "I applaud your efforts, I can see your invention being sold as a combo family pack."

It should be noted that Neevel's video, suspenseful music and all, made its original appearance on the Oreo website. And the guy's a copywriter. So could this all be just a clever way to get us talking about Oreos and how to eat them? Probably, and it worked.

Ultimately, many of the photos and cellphone records of Trayvon Martin released online Thursday by George Zimmerman’s defense attorneys – indicating that the slain teenager smoked marijuana, got into fights at school, and had an interest in, and perhaps access to, guns – may be ruled inadmissible in court. But they are already making the rounds in the court of public opinion, which can influence everything from fundraising efforts to the mind-set of potential jurors in Mr. Zimmerman's murder trial.
