Public Outrage Over Alleged Mormon Baptism of Anne Frank

A controversial Mormon practice called "proxy baptism" is causing quite a stir on the Web and various media outlets. Anyone in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can propose the process, which is the conversion of Jews, Christians, and Muslims to the Mormon faith after they die. Many Mormons believe the baptism ritual allows deceased people a way to the afterlife.

There has been a lot of criticism of proxy baptisms in the past, but the newest person receiving a proxy baptism is enraging some people. A new report says Anne Frank, a well-known Jewish Holocaust victim, was posthumously baptized by members of the Mormon Church at a location in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic on February 18.

The allegation comes from researcher Helen Radkey, an excommunicated Mormon Church member turned whistleblower. Radkey asserts that the practice is nothing new and adds that public figures such as Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, and Joan of Arc have also undergone proxy baptisms.

Last night, on the Comedy Central show "The Colbert Report," Stephen Colbert jokingly retaliated. People are in an uproar online as well and have used Twitter to express their frustration. One person tweeted that the baptism is "ridiculous" and "despicable." The Mormon Church has issued a statement saying that it does not condone the baptism of Holocaust victims, and is considering taking disciplinary action against the people who performed the proxy baptism for Frank.

During Wednesday night's GOP debate, presidential hopeful Mitt Romney received a round of applause after commenting on his hopes for America. As he began to conclude his thought, he made a reference to the '90s sitcom "Seinfeld," saying "as George Costanza would say, when they're applauding, stop."

The only problem with that statement is that Costanza did not actually say that. It was title character, Jerry Seinfeld. The actor who played Costanza, Jason Alexander, responded to Romney on Twitter. Alexander tweeted, "Thrilled Gov. Romney enjoys my old character. I enjoyed the character he used 2 be 2. If he'd embrace that again, he'd b a great candidate." Alexander used the hashtag #Costanza4Prez and tweeted later that he would like actress Marisa Tomei to be a potential first lady.

"Seinfeld" fans began embracing #Costanza4Prez and tweeting their own humorous suggestions for who should be in the White House. One person tweeted, "finally a president who doesn't yada yada yada," and another said a President Costanza would make Festivus, a running joke on the sitcom, a national holiday. Alexander apparently was paying close attention to his timeline, because he later tweeted his thanks to fans for all of their ideas, saying he was truly flattered and had been laughing at the creations all day.

Why all of this argument about religions? We live in America we have the freedom to practice religion just like you have the right to not practice religion. People need to respect that there is always going to be a religion different than ours just like there are views different than ours. These arguments and destructive words need to stop.
      • Brigitte 3 mths ago
Agreed!!! I am a dedicated LDS and I'm a teenager and what people are saying about my religion hurts. They do not understand what we believe.
      • rachel 3 mths ago
Brigitte, I'm sorry your feelings are hurt, however my faith teaches that those who actively covert others are more evil than murders. Murders harm the mortal body but proselytizers harm the immortal soul. It sickens me that people believe they can knock on my door, speak for the Lord and claim without their interference the Holy One would condemn countless souls to eternal suffering. So, once again, I am sorry if your feelings are hurt, but if you feel the need the foist your faith on others by proselytizing, knocking on doors, or handing out religious tracts, you have brought it on yourself. I would never go to your home to tell you why your faith is wrong, please don't come to mine.

Rachel, if you knew that the true gospel of Christ was the only way to attain eternal life, and it made you more happy than you could possibly imagine, wouldn't you want to share it with other people, so that they could be happy too? Personally, I'd want to share my happiness with others. That's what Christ did.

This poor girl was murdered for being Jewish. If anyone has earned the right to have her faith respected it should be she.
      • Eric Cartman 3 mths ago
        It should be her^
      • Fed Up 3 mths ago
No, Eric, it has to be "she" because the verb "to be" takes the nominative case, not the accusative.
      • pitcairnis 3 mths ago
Her faith was respected, Fed Up. This was done in private. Blame the whistle blower if you must have a scapegoat. Wherever Anne Frank is in the next life (or isn't), she doesn't care. Why should you?

      Jesus was a Jew.
      • Ron 3 mths ago
What? You mean he's not a blonde long hair, blue eyed, white greek god?
      • Ms American 3 mths ago
NO RON, he was not blonde and blue eyed. He was probably olive skinned with dark eyes and a dark beard and long DARK hair and Christians go against the ten Commandments by creating GRAVEN IMAGES to who they have created as GOD. The Ten Commandments states Thou shall create no graven images and Jesus said to obey the laws of Moses and the Ten Commandments so the Christians already broke that one.

Wow - I wonder which denomination will be right on "judgement day" OR will none of them be correct?
    • grnlss  •  3 mths ago
Please keep your faith to yourself. Keep it out of politics and public. The whole world does not have to think the same way or be wrong. That is why God gave us all free will and a mind of our own.

I'm thinkin' Jews should give Brigham Young or Joseph Smith a Bar Mitzvah...what say ye?
    • yahoo user  •  Sunnyvale, California  •  3 mths ago
That's ok Romney is now a pagan. I just took care of it.
    • Wanda  •  Sacramento, California  •  3 mths ago
How come it is ok to baptize anyone after they are dead....unless others are upset? IF it is wrong for proxy baptism of one person it is wrong for all. However, I thought baptism was a personal choice, not something someone else can do for you~ especially if your dead!
    • kristenb  •  Wickliffe, Ohio  •  3 mths ago
Why cant people just leave things that CAN'T change alone. Anne Frank was Jewish and I believe no one can change that!
    • Mark  •  3 mths ago
Please consult the New Testament for the proper application of Baptism for LIVING people..
    • Elizabeth  •  Laie, Hawaii  •  3 mths ago
According to Mormon doctrine, the baptism of a person who is dead has to be accepted by them, it wouldn't force them to change religions. If Anne Frank wants to stay Jewish in the afterlife, it doesn't matter how many times Mormons baptize her. Everyone has a choice.
    • Paul  •  3 mths ago
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I read Anne Frank referred to as "a well-known Jewish Holocaust victim." Does the writer really think readers are that ignorant? Have we tweeted ourselves to the point where we ARE that clueless and uncaring?
    • beetlebop  •  Tampa, Florida  •  2 mths ago
Did they put magical underwear on her too. I am sure Ditt Romney would do it himself.
    • Kenzie  •  2 mths ago
Just so everyone knows, a proxy baptism is a chance for the dead to CHOOSE whether or not they want to be baptized in the afterlife. just so we're clear.
    • Kenzie  •  2 mths ago
ya know... if its so 'outrageous' that Latter Day Saints do Baptisms for the Dead, or 'Proxy Baptisms as you so called it, why don't you think about how stupid you sound. If The Church is true, then they have a chance in heaven to have all the blessings they can have. if its not, then absolutely nothing happens, and they go on with their after lives, or not, depending on what you believe. this whole thing is probably a rumor anyways... there has always been "Mormon Lore," and I doubt that this is anything more than that. also, our excommunicated members like to make us sound really bad. so don't believe everything you here. there. I am off my soapbox now. go on with your day.
    • Rachel  •  3 mths ago
I don't condone baptizing anyone that's deceased. If they didn't choose Christ while living their free will and a destiny cannot stripped from them once the're long gone. That and it's not their decision whether they're a Christian or not. Ultimately, it's theirs (the deceased person). A person cannot be converted if they are dead.
