Microsoft PowerPoint, you might love it or hate it. Hundreds of Swiss hate it. They are part of the newly formed Anti-PowerPoint Party (APPP), which wants the Swiss government to hold a referendum on the slideshow program. They say PowerPoint costs the Swiss economy 2.1 billion Swiss Francs a year, or US$2.5 billion. The APPP bases its claim on its conclusion that 85 percent of people who attend PowerPoint presentations actually lose productivity. The party's calling for supporters to sign its online petition and join its Facebook page. So far it has 153 Facebook members and fewer than 300 online signatures (it needs 100,000 for the country to hold a referendum). Despite current membership levels, the APPP hopes to grow to 33,000 members and become Switzerland's fourth-largest party, thus bringing the PowerPoint issue to the political agenda. "The more people talk about it, the more change will take place," says APPP founder Matthias Poehm. Oh and by the way, members have to buy Poehm's book "The PowerPoint Fallacy" to join the party.
"Casey Anthony's trial was to Twitter as O.J. Simpson's trial was to cable news"— that's how a New York Times reporter described the trial's media frenzy on Twitter. Parallels between the two trials took the Twittersphere by storm yesterday, especially after realty TV star Kim Kardashian tweeted, "WHAT!!!!???!!!! CASEY ANTHONY FOUND NOT GUILTY!!!! I am speechless!!!" You might remember Kardashian's father, Robert Kardashian, defended Simpson in a 1995 murder trial in which Simpson was famously acquitted. Kim Kardashian's tweet of shock was met with a flurry of responses on Twitter. One person wrote, "ME TOO!! ITS LIKE WHEN YOUR DAD HELPED GET O.J. OFF!!" Kardashian stood her ground by tweeting, "Reading the comments here & its nuts people think just bc I was close to the OJ trial I can't have my own opinion on the Casey Anthony case?"
Finally, remember Jimmy McMillan, the man who ran for governor of New York last year on the Rent Is 2 Damn High campaign? The video from the 2010 gubernatorial debate went viral thanks to McMillan's rent ranting. Now McMillan's making a media comeback. He stars in a new documentary called "Damn!" which takes a look at how McMillan became an instant phenomenon. The film is playing in select New York theaters and will be available for download and on DVD on August 16. To watch the trailer, click here. "Documenting this journey, the film is able to raise many difficult, yet critical, questions," says the film's director, Aaron Fisher-Cohen. "What drives some individuals to seek this sort of attention, and what compels society to grant it to certain people over others? How does social media drive these sensational events and people? How is our increasingly diminishing attention span affecting the state of politics?" I guess we'll wait and see how the documentary does.
