The infamous 1986 World Series between the New York Mets and the Boston Red Sox has gotten a remix. A group of kids in Kenya have created a viral video sensation by re-enacting the play that helped make Bill Buckner a household name for all the wrong reasons.
After becoming familiar with the real-life events of several famous sports blunders, the students wanted to pay tribute by re-enacting an American baseball event. In their tribute, instead of bats, they use tennis racquets and a tennis ball to create the scene, but what captures the essence of that game so well is the actual audio from the announcers on that infamous day.
So far, the video has received more than 64,000 views. One comment said, "These kids did an awesome job capturing the moment." Another tweeted, "This is tremendous! Comfort on a bad day."
Many attributed Buckner's error to the "Curse of the Bambino," the superstition that the Boston Red Sox were cursed after selling Babe Ruth ("the Great Bambino") to the New York Yankees in the offseason between 1919 and 1920. Before the Red Sox traded Ruth, the franchise had been successful in winning the very first World Series, and five more titles. Without Ruth, the franchise did not win another World Series championship for 86 years. Talk about a drought.
