Who killed hitchBOT? Security camera footage allegedly shows hitchhiking robot’s destruction

*Update: hitchBOT was destroyed in Philadelphia, but the security footage posted was a prank by Jesse Wellens, the man behind PrankvsPrank on YouTube.

The world wants to know: Who killed hitchBOT?

As we told you yesterday, this friendly Canadian hitchhiking robot met its demise in Philadelphia just two weeks into a journey across the United States.

Now vlogger Jesse Wellens has released what he says is security camera footage of hitchBOT’s grisly demise.

Wellens, a Philly-based YouTube star, was one of the last two people to see the robot intact.

He and a friend picked up the bot in the early morning hours of Aug. 1, and dropped it off for the next travelers to pick up.

Wellens tweeted out to his nearly 900,000 followers, “Dropping off the Robot at Elfreths Ally. Waiting for one of you peeps to pick it up.”

Sadly, his peeps did not show. Instead, hitchBOT was met by an unknown man wiearing a sports jersey and a backwards baseball hat.

Who this man is remains a mystery, but every robot be warned: The city of brotherly love is not too friendly to robots.
