'Sons of Anarchy' Recap: That's Going to Destroy You, Man

Warning: This recap for the "Suits of Woe" episode of Sons of Anarchy contains storyline and character spoilers.

Jax not only knows Gemma killed Tara; now he believes it.

When Abel dropped that bombshell at the end of last week’s episode, Jax was understandably stunned, and not quite ready to assume the disturbing reveal from his 5-year-old was true. But through a circuitous route that would be most easily explained with a flowchart, Jax gets backup for Abel’s bedtime story, and a heartbreaking episode ends with Nero trying to convince Jax he cannot kill his mother and survive himself.

"A son killing his mother... Jax, that's a wound that's too deep to heal," Nero says. "And I know you, mano. That's going to swallow you up. That's going to destroy you, man."

"That's the part that hurts the most about all of this, man," Jax replies. "After everything she did, all the lies, the death, the wreckage, I still love her, you know? She's my mom."

The big questions left to answer with just two episodes left in the series:

Jax and Gemma: Where will their showdown take place?

Wendy confesses to Jax that she and Gemma had helped Juice evade the club right after Tara's death. That makes Jax curious about why Gemma and Juice would be in cahoots. He seeks answers from Unser — who doesn't have any on this specific topic — as he and the fellas try to track down Gemma to get the truth (or likely not) from her.

Gemma, meanwhile, learns from Unser that Jax knows she was working with Juice, and that Jarry knows Chris Dun wasn't even in Charming the night Tara was killed. That's enough to make Gemma pack a bag and plan to lam it, after saying goodbye to both her grandsons. She gives Abel a ring that she hopes he'll wear when he patches into SAMCRO (could there be a more crushing conclusion/continuation of this story than if that were allowed to happen?) and then meets up with Nero in front of the house where she was born.

As she runs down her list of family regrets, Nero gets a call from Jax, who's looking for Gemma. Nero refuses to give her up without knowing why Jax is demanding to see her, so, with the camera only on Nero's end of the conversation, Jax tells him. And he's crushed — in a performance that should, were Emmy voters to watch Jimmy Smits's nuanced performance this season, earn him a nomination. Gemma confesses her guilt, leaving Nero speechless, then sitting on a curb sobbing after she drives away.

The last we see Gemma, she's driving through the night, listening to hymns as she passes a sign for Portento, Fortuna, and Eureka, likely on her way to her father's house. Is that where Jax will eventually catch up with her? Will their showdown be one-on-one, or will Nero and Jax's SAMCRO brethren ride with him? Will he kill her? Or is there a chance, with all the distractions in Charming, and the fact that there's an APB out on Jax after he hit Unser and stole a car while fleeing the police, that Jax and Gemma never see each other again before something happens to one of them?

Can SAMCRO forgive Gemma?

Jax calls a meeting and tells the club Gemma killed Tara. He takes the blame for everything that happened as a result of Tara's death, all the decisions he made, but since the death of their beloved Bobby is a very personal piece of fallout from Gemma's actions, will the club be able to forgive her — and allow her to live — even if Jax decides he can't kill his mother?

The rat was revealed; what will be the price of his betrayal?

Tig? Nope. Rat? Nope. It's Barofsky (Peter Weller, who also directed this episode) — which is a bit of a letdown, stakes-wise, but makes perfect sense. Before Juice kills Lin in the Stockton jail (oh yeah, by the way, Juice kills Lin in the Stockton jail), he gets Lin to confess that Barofsky gave SAMCRO up, all in the name of some extra cash.

Jax and the rest of his crew had other things on their minds, so they missed Barofsky (which means Weller also missed the chance to direct his own on-screen death), but that almost certainly won't continue on past the next, and penultimate, episode.

Does Unser learn the truth?

He and Jarry ruled out Chris Dun as Tara's killer, and Unser is, as always, in the middle of the Teller family drama. But while he knows something bad has happened — something bad enough to make Gemma flee, permanently, Chucky suggests — will Unser find out exactly what Gemma did? Will it cause him to finally turn his back on her?

Who kills Juice?

Jax thanks Juice for telling him the whole truth about Tara's murder, and then adds he will make sure his death is quick. Juice, who had fooled himself into believing all would be forgiven if he got the name of the SAMCRO rat and carried out Lin's murder, knows now that all is lost, and seems to have accepted his fate. The question is no longer if he'll die, but by whose hand?

Who gets to Jax first: August Marks or the Indian Hills MC?

Marks is still in jail, but will make bail soon. The Indian Hills Sons members are airing their grievances about Jax killing Jury, and Happy and the others hear things are not going in Jax's favor. With Mr. Teller obviously preoccupied by his mad mama's misdeeds, is he in any shape to be as sharp as he needs to be to take on these enemies? And, as has been the theme of the storyline since Tara's death, will it be Jax's friends and others around him who continue to feel the blowback of situations he, and Gemma, have created?

Happily ever after: Wendy, Nero, and the boys?

Has Nero really let go of Gemma? If Jax goes after her, will Nero follow to protect Gemma from her son? Or will he choose to follow his long-planned exit strategy and end up on his uncle's farm? With Wendy — and maybe Abel and Thomas — in tow?

How did John Teller die?

Jax, with a little help from Chucky, continues to restore his dad's motorcycle, the one John was riding when he died. Series lore, as we've understood it, was that Gemma and Clay conspired to kill John, so Clay could take his place. Jury told Jax, in their showdown before Jax killed him, that John killed himself. The bike is probably the key to the truth, and executive producer Paris Barclay confirmed to Yahoo TV that the truth about John Teller's death will factor into the series' end.

"And if that is true [that John Teller committed suicide], what does that mean about the whole mythology Jax has created around his father?" Barclay asked. "Does he reevaluate everything?"

In other words, with his family destroyed, and only a handful of club members still standing, what would become of Jax if he learns everything he believed about his father, his motivations for trying to change the club, have been a lie?

Maybe August Marks and the Indian Hills crew aren't the biggest threats to Jax's survival after all.

Let's hear your theories, SoA fans. Two episodes remain: Who will live and who will die before the reaper flashes on the screen one final time?

Sons of Anarchy airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on FX.
