9/11 first responders left out of 10th anniversary event

Click for more images of the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero9/11 Memorial at Ground ZeroPresident Obama will be there. So will former president George W. Bush and former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani. And, of course, the current mayor, Michael Bloomberg, will attend.

But Sept. 11 first responders, the emergency workers who helped with the rescue and recovery efforts 10 years ago, will be denied entry to the 9/11 National Memorial on the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

The 90,000 or so firefighters, police officers, and civilian volunteers who rushed toward the burning twin towers are not invited to the ceremonies on Sept. 11.

Mayor Bloomberg confirmed that the day would be reserved for victims' families. "Family members only will be allowed to walk onto the plaza, look at their loved ones' names, look down into the voids," he said, referring to the reflecting pools in the footprints of the two towers. Bloomberg added, "The first day, it's reserved for those family members who lost somebody on 9/11."

And, in fact, first responders have never been officially invited to the events. But that doesn't make it right, says John Feal, founder of an advocacy group for first responders, many of whom are now battling cancer and other diseases. Feal, a first responder himself, told CNN, "The best of the best that this country offered 10 years ago are being neglected and denied their rightful place."

In fact, as construction of the 9/11 National Memorial continues, passes are required for those who wish to visit the site. The passes, which are free, are for a specified date and time.

When the online reservation system opened, the 5,000 passes for the opening date to the public, Sept. 12, were snapped up within an hour. Since then, the memorial foundation has made more slots available.

Really!!! They too lost members of their units when the towers came crushing down, while trying to save those trapped inside. How shameful. All who were there SHOULD BE allowed to attend..

This is complete #$%$ Who were the ones @ ground zero risking their lives goind into those buildings and pulling people out. First responders, FDNY, NYPD, and all of EMS. Where was the President? away from all of it. Where was the Mayor? not @ ground zero helping I can tell you that much or maybe he was but he wasn't helping pull people out of buildings. Read Repot From round Zero by Dennis Scott. It tells different stories from people and their experience @ ground zero. The 10 year memorial, total #$%$

Well then, Let Obama or some other official sit it out and let the 1st responders be there, where they belong. Right up front. These people risk their lives, saw death and destruction while others sat on their butt. This is sad, horrible misjudgment. If they don't have the room for a venue this size, make cuts in other areas. Do NOT cut off you hand, that feeds you.. ( or should I say) The Hands that SAVES you..

I am sure a few of those first responders lost people close to them, brother firefighters, policemen and fellow New Yorkers..If you think about it, we all lost fellow Americans. God Bless the first responders.

Write or call your Representatives and Senators. If they're planning to attend, then suggest that they give up their place for a responder to attend in their place.

Love Yahoo's new way of HIDING the majority view: No more sorting by Highest Rated/Thumps Up. Sorry Yahoo, people are waking up and there's nothing you can do about it.

So who did Obama, Bush, Guiliani, and Bloomberg lose? Voter confidence does not count. Love how they wrap themselves in the flag whenever a "good opportunity presents itself". First Responders should be there. Many of them have lost their lives or sick/dying because of how bad the air quality was. It is disgusting how they have been treated over the last ten years. People need to look it up.

Dont be so easily pursuaded by headlines. It's a logistics issue and a decision had to be made. Would it make you sleep better at night to know that people who lost family members were denied access to the service? There is only so much space there and a definite amount of people that can fit into this space. Perhaps they should have held a lottery and left it up to chance whether people got to attend? No! Thank God for the first responders but I think the people that died and their families have been lost in the obscurity of a big number and lost behind the memorials to the first responders. This is a time to focus on the lost. If a first responder lost a family member then they ARE invited, so keep that in mind too.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...they invented a thing called a line. And this is used to organize who goes first, second, third, so on and so forth until you get to the end. So why hasn't anyone thought of this? This is why we should NOT pay our taxes, because these #$%$ clowns don't even know what a line is used for or how to accomplish anything other than disgracing these brave and noble souls who sacrificed years of their health to save people...and they get repaid like this. Shame.
      • Shannon 8 mths ago
so then you want to be the person to turn people away and say "im sorry that your daddy died here but we dont have room for you because these people that didnt lose anyone got here first"
      • Zack 8 mths ago
How about this... there was enough room for them there on 9/11... So why not now? Secondly, how about some of the people who lost their lives who may not have had family? Perhaps the closest thing to them was their co-workers. Brothers in uniform perhaps. Those people are lost in the mix. Also, last I looked the 11th is a Sunday. Why not have a ceremonial weekend? 10th AND 11th?!? Who needs some #$%$ politician to have a remembrance? I'm sure NYC's finest would be happy to show up first w/o some douche congressman speaking to them or cameras/media filming it all.

Why is this not front page news!!! Shame at all who are not outraged! These are the men and women who put their lives at risk, who lost loved ones that day, and are still battling the effects of that tragic day...not room at the inn? MAKE ROOM!!

Tell you what, leave the politicians out ,let the emergency workers run the show and give testimonials with all the victims families there and then you'll really see what this country is all about. Just another photo op for Bloomberg and Barach HUSSEIN Obama. How the hell do do you leave out first responders at a 9/11 ten year ceremony!?!?
