Defense Secretary Robert Gates plans to resign his post sometime next year. In an interview with Foreign Policy's Fred Kaplan, Gates says he'll step down once the Pentagon fulfills President Obama's strategy review of the occupation in Afghanistan.
"I think that by next year I'll be in a position where -- you know, we're going to know whether the strategy is working in Afghanistan," Gates tells FP. "We'll have completed the surge.
