Around the world in 6,237 pictures

After quitting his job, photographer and artist Kien Lam took a trip around the world. Over the course of a year, he visited 17 countries and took 6,237 photographs. Wanting to share his epic journey with others, Lam put his photos together to create a kind of time-lapse video that has enthralled the Web.

In a little less than five minutes, viewers are treated to beautiful shots of the U.S., England, France, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia, and Peru.

On Lam's official site, he explains that he didn't really have an itinerary in mind when he set out.

I had a direction I wanted to head and a goal of following the sun to get as many warm days as possible. 2010 was a particularly cold year in San Francisco and I just wanted to wear shorts and flip-flops as many days as possible to make up for that. I would usually figure out my next destination when I was ready to leave my current one. Sometimes it was a particular dish, sight or story that brought to the next city and sometimes it was the company I kept and our desire to travel together for just a bit longer.

It may have been one man's off-the-cuff trip, but viewers would be excused if they thought this was something produced by National Geographic. All told, Lam took 19 planes, 58 buses, and 18 boats to see what he wanted to see. And, according to his site, he did it on the cheap, staying in hostels for about $3 to $15 per night.

Plan your next trip on Yahoo! Travel.

Sure, the flights weren't cheap, but when it was all said and done, the San Francisco native claims that it cost him a "little less to travel around the world than to just stay put in SF."

How sad that someone shares, for free, amazing images of his travels, and people still complain. We complain that he didn't choose the countries we may have chosen or that images of these places are already available. My goodness, grumblers. Thank you, Mr. Lam, for taking us on a beautiful journey.

WHY DID SOMEONE THUMBS DOWN THIS COMMENT???
      • Jonathan 4 mths ago
because the music was cheesy. Listen to Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words if you actually want something that might evoke a hint of emotion.

Elaine: Perhaps a mistake. I've done it before.

You would be amazed at where you could go and what you could do on a shoe string. Open an account and save for one year just for travel. Don't be sad DO it! I did and I'm poverty level in U.S. Be willing to sleep in huts, tents, dirt cheap hotels. Eat what the natives eat, avoid tourist traps where prices soar, learn a little of the language. Be friendly and avoid sleezy people. Have fun, don't break any of the laws, don't stick with strict plan. Take time to relax. Don't try to see and do it all. With or with out travel companion. Makes me want to plan another trip.

Absolutely wonderful. It was so great watching people enjoying their everyday lives. Instead of wars and fighting. This was very refreshing.

Watching this saddens me to know that I will probably never go to most of those places, but still cool.

Nicely done! I love how it feels like I have just watched everything that happened all over the world, during one single day from sunrise to sunset and into the night. This film speaks volumes about how regardless of our race, language, religion or politics, we are all a very similar species of animal. If an intelligent being from outside our world were to view this, they would get a look at the human race without all of the unnecessary drama that many of us are trying to get away from!

Just beautiful...amazing planet we have here.....protect it
    • starspire  •  Ventura, California  •  4 mths ago
Cool, it looked like all one earth instead of different peoples and countries... Go figure, eh?
    • Jr  •  Wausau, Wisconsin  •  4 mths ago
"Travel is the enemy of bigotry and the foe of small mindedness" Mark Twain" my favorite quote. I wish more people could get out and experience other countries and cultures. I've been to 5 of the countries on his list and many that are not. I do it on the cheap like he does, it's not very expensive in places where you can live on $20 a day. You gotta wanna.
