Even pastor’s old church condemns Quran-burning

AP100830159693It's increasingly looking as though the only spiritual or political figure who will not denounce Florida pastor Terry Jones' plan to commemorate Sept. 11 by burning copies of the Quran is Jones himself. Wednesday brings the news that even the church Jones founded in Germany in the 1980s  is condemning the upcoming Quran-burning at his small place of worship in Gainesville, Fla.

"We are surprised and shocked at the extreme radicalism being displayed [by Jones] right now on this issue," Stephan Baar of the Christian Community of Cologne told the Associated Press. The 60-member church kicked out Jones in 2008. Jones' estranged daughter says the eviction arose from her father's reported penchant for dipping into the church's till to pay his own expenses.

Jones' wish to burn hundreds of copies of the Islamic holy book has drawn a wide chorus of protests. Gen. David Petraeus said on Monday the action could hurt U.S. troops, while hundreds of Afghans protested in Kabul and burned Jones in effigy. The Gainesville Fire Department has denied Jones a permit for the event -- but the pastor says he plans to go ahead with it anyway.

Indeed, so many high-profile people have spoken out against the plan that they may now outnumber the fringe church's 50-member congregation, raising the question of whether the condemnations are magnifying the cause of a very small group of extremists.

Here's a partial list of people who have condemned the planned bonfire:

    • "It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," top commander in Afghanistan Gen. David Petraeus told the media. "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems.
    • As "an act of patriotism," the media should not cover the burning, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said. She also said, "It's regrettable that a pastor in Gainesville, Florida, with a church of no more than 50 people can make this outrageous and distressful, disgraceful plan, and get the world's attention":
    • The terrorist attacks of 9/11, says the Vatican, "cannot be counteracted by an outrageous and grave gesture against a book considered sacred by a religious community."
    • Attorney General Eric Holder called the plan "idiotic and dangerous."
    • Presumed presidential candidate Mitt Romney told Politico
"Burning the Quran is wrong on every level. It puts troops in danger, and it violates a founding principle of our republic."

    • "I do not think well of the idea of burning anybody's Koran, Bible, Book of Mormon or anything else," Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour told reporters. "I don't think there is any excuse for it. I don't think it's a good idea."
    • "Any type of activity like that that puts our troops in harm's way would be a concern," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Tuesday.
    • "I appeal to people who are planning to burn the Quran to reconsider and drop their plans because they are inconsistent with American values and, as General Petraeus has warned, threatening to America's military," Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman said in a statement.

Nice language mommy! You "is" educated.

      -----------

      "Lingerie"

That's called "marketing" and "publicity" nitwit. It's not like this line of clothing is comprised of cro - tchless panties, see through tops and bottoms, etc. They are nothing more than items one could buy at a "regular" store for your kids... tank tops, panties and cleverly marketed bathing suits. You are just too daft to realize the difference.

      -----------

      "modeling"

Yeah, because parents don't take 9 trillion pictures of their kids with their digital cameras. I'll bet you never told your child to pose a certain way in a picture now did you? Stop being a hypocrite.

      -----------

"lip gloss with "F me lips"

Are you that naive to really think that a 4 year old even knows what "F me lips" are?

Little girls love to play "make up" at home. I guess they are all being taught to be little whores now too. Give me a break.

What do you think the photographers are saying to these kids? "Come on now little girl, show me your "F me lips?" LMAO... get a clue. It's more like they are saying, "Put your lips together like a fishy" or something of the like. Sorry that your one-dimensional thinking can't allow you to realize this.

      ---------

      "beauty pagents,"

Do you not comb your daughter's hair? Do you not get her hair cut? Do you have her wear clothes that have holes in them or ones that you buy from Goodwill (that are still effective as clothing, just not aesthetically pleasing)? Is her one piece bathing suit the cheapest one you could find so you could put that extra one dollar savings toward her college fund or did you spend that extra money to get a "cute" bathing suit? I think we both know the answers to those questions.

You do those things because you are trying to make her look pretty when she goes out in public.

      ----------

      "bras for 8 year old"

Actually some girls have already entered into thelarche and have growing breasts by that age.

So basically you think bikinis for girls 8 years and under should be outlawed. Hilarious.

      ---------

      "pedophiles etc"

What do pedophiles have to do with this? When you take your 8 year old daughter out to the beach in her one piece, you don't think pedophiles can be on the beach getting their jollies off on her? If someone is a pedophile, they can have unlimited access to children by simply having their own kids.

Speaking of pedophiles, if you are religious and bring your kids to church, you are placing your own kids at risk of being near pedophiles. As you are when you bring them to swim teams, sports coaches, girl/boy scouts, school, etc, etc, etc.... any place where a pedophile has easy access to them. So stop your rampant paranoia.

      ----------

      "... are sick"

      Pedophiles are sick.

      ---------

      "and you are stupid!"

I'll gladly place my education up against yours any day of the week.

      --------

"My 8 year old girl wears a one piece so she gets better protection from sun and we enjoy the beach!"

Good for you! Though you could simply apply the same sunscreen that you put on her face, arms and legs onto her midriff and back if she were wearing a two piece.

With that said, I have a hard time believing that your daughter has NEVER worn a bikini at some point in her life. Surely someone has given you one as a gift or you purchased one yourself. So why did you put it on her since you don't believe kids need bras?

In the end, would I let my kid pose for these photo shoots or be in a beauty pageant? No I wouldn't. Is it because I wouldn't want some psycho kidnapper like the guy who took Jon Benet to stalk her. I also don't believe beauty pageants teach girls proper priorities. However, just because I wouldn't do it, doesn't mean that I want to ban other parents from doing what they see fit for their kids. The risk of a Jon Benet like case happening to any of these girls is EXTREMELY minimal to the point where it hardly even exists
