"I am running for the United States Senate because I love my country and I don't like where it's going," Simmons said unequivocally.
Now he’s picked up a key endorsement in the race. On Thursday morning, the Hartford Courant’s editorial board publicly supported Simmons over his GOP rival, former World Wrestling Entertainment chief Linda McMahon.
While the paper's editors praise McMahon as a “breath of fresh air” in the state’s politics, they also slam her for not being willing to participate in debates against her opponents. And they fret that her ties to the WWE or that “any whiff of scandal” could fell her campaign.
The Courant editorial praises Simmons’ “impressive resume” and likes that he’s in the political “mainstream.” Still, the authors admit they are as weirded out by his “strange non-campaign campaign” as we are — calling it their only real doubt they harbor about his bid.
