Sinkhole swallows SUV, traffic light in Wisconsin

A driver managed to escape unharmed after his Cadillac Escalade was swallowed up by a sinkhole in Milwaukee's heavy rain Thursday.

"The Escalade just went wham!" bystander Mark Pawlik, who rescued the driver, told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "Everything went down." Pawlik provided dramatic pictures of the sinkhole.

Pawlik told the paper that the driver kept asking, "What happened? What just happened?"

The sinkhole, which Pawlik estimated at 20 feet deep, also swallowed up a traffic light.

Wisconsin's governor declared a state of emergency Friday because of Milwaukee flooding. Flights were canceled at General Mitchell International Airport, thousands of homes lost power, and two people were struck by lightning, the AP reported.
