    The Upshot

Surging online interest in Domnica Cemortan

    (Domnica Cemortan)

Francesco Schettino, captain of the ill-fated Costa Concordia, may be the least popular man in Europe. However, he does have at least one fan. Domnica Cemortan (sometimes spelled "Dominica Cermotan") of Moldova is doing her best to defend Schettino's honor.

The 25-year-old gave an interview with Moldova's Jurnal TV. She claims Schettino "did a great thing, he saved over 3,000 lives" and that he stayed on deck until 11:50 p.m., an assertion that contradicts other reports. The ship sank on Jan. 14. Eleven people have been confirmed dead; 21 more are missing.

Cemortan has worked on cruise ships, but she claims, according to ABC News, to have been onboard the Costa Concordia as a passenger. The trip, she has said, was a birthday present.

Seafarers outraged that captain jumped ship

Over the past several days, web interest in Cemortan has skyrocketed. Information about the Moldovan is scant; several photos, however, apparently from her Facebook account, have surfaced.

    (Domnica Cemortan)

According to the U.K.'s Telegraph, Cemortan said in an interview that she feels Schettino is being unfairly criticized: "Look at how many people are alive because of him. It's a tragedy that people are missing, but he saved over 3,000 people on that ship because of his actions."

According to the AP, Cemortan posted on her Facebook page that "she wasn't on duty the night of the grounding but was with Schettino, other officers and the cruise director on the bridge. She said she was called up from dinner to help with translations of instructions for how the small number of Russian passengers should evacuate."

Authorities are eager to speak with her, as it has been widely reported that she was with Schettino during the disaster. Cemortan denies she is the captain's girlfriend. She's also said that reports the captain was drinking in the ship's bar are false.

Italy IDs four more cruise ship victims

The captain has claimed that he fell into the life boat when the ship tilted the side, an assertion that has been widely mocked. A recently released audiotape of an Italian Coast Guard official yelling at the captain to get back on board has inspired t-shirts and Facebook pages.

Saved 3,000, abandoned 1,000 that gives him a 75% average, still nothing to brag about.

You know what's better than "more than 3000 lives saved"? Never having the necessity to save them in the first place. If the #$%$ stayed on course, none of this crap would've happened.

Let's get something straight you ignorant #$%$ If you BROKE THE RULES and took the ship on a different course as a favor to the chef which ended up hitting a reef and sinking and causing people to die, you are NOT eligible to be called a HERO under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Even if you did save a few lives. What a stupid #$%$ Let's see:1) He failed to alert the Coast Guard or anyone else as to what really happened, so no additional help arrived. By the time they were speaking to the Coast Guard 30 minutes after impact, they were still saying it's just a power failure.2) Why is the crew telling people it's a blackout? I keep reading that Captain Dingbat was in the restaurant when the ship hit, and other passengers reported the dinnerware was airborne, hitting people in the head. So why does the entire crew, even 30 minutes later, after some passengers are already on land and reporting what happened, think it's merely a blackout? That sounds like a conspiracy to hide the truth to me. And that has cost 11 lives, and possibly 21 more.3) If Captain Dooshbag was onboard for 2 hours and 5 minutes, what was he doing? She says whatever he did, he was saving 3,000 lives. How come so many of the crew members - and passengers - are saying nobody seemed to be in charge or giving directions? Whatever he was doing, he sure wasn't communicating to anyone.4) I've never been on a cruise ship. But if people are getting hit by flying plates, is it remotely possible that anyone anywhere else on the ship didn't feel the impact? A electrical blackout isn't going to send my coffee cup into the air.Somebody slap this #$%$

The fact that the media has come down so strongly against the captain, with "overwhelming evidence" that he is guilty just seems too heavy-handed. I'm skeptical that the "powers that be" may have instructed the media to portray him in this unfavorable light. Something about this "unanimous lynch mob" just doesn't ring true.
      • madcap rex 4 mths ago
You're sure fired up over nothing. maybe someone should slap you.
      • Sharon 4 mths ago
@madcap rex==="fired up over NOTHING"???...are you serious???..the loss of ONE life, let alone the body count now, is MORE than enough for anyone with any compassion to be "fired up"!!!...your opinion has been duly noted and now, it's time for someone to slap YOU!!!!

Just an observation - the Captain of a cruise liner should probably know what a sandbar is and how to avoid them. I can't believe this #$%$ hit one - with all the technology he has at his disposal on the bridge?! I was in the US Navy - and I can tell you this: The Captain goes down with his ship if he has to, but he should always be the last person off if an abandon ship is ordered. So yes, I question this guy's honor - because he obviously has none.
      • Justin 4 mths ago
Takes more than a sandbar to damage a ship like that...you see the pics? There were rocks and cliffs 1000 feet away...far too close for anything that big...
      • OK, Now What! 4 mths ago
I think the ship would have made a big dent in a sandbar, it just could not move the rocks. Now this ship so I read only cost $500 million? Someone said it was damaged? It is more like DESTROYED! I am not so sure this ship will sail again. Although I believe thay may be able to upright the ship with some sort of float, There is an awful lot of stuff on one side of that ship. The cost to Carnival will be very high. Let's hope they can get the fuel off board before it destroys the marinelife and clean water.
      • boobookittysmom 4 mths ago
It is on a REEF and ROCKS that form a shelf which made a 160 foot GASH in the side of the ship! It is in danger of shifting off the shelf and sinking completely to the bottom!
    • I Got PED's  •  Denver, Colorado  •  4 mths ago
He was a freaking coward in my eyes...no capt. worth a dang would ever leave a sinking ship until all passangers and crew are safetly off the vessel....this comming from an ex-capt of a commercial longliner
    • Steve  •  4 mths ago
"Look at how many people are alive because of him. It's a tragedy that people are missing, but he saved over 3,000 people on that ship because of his actions." .... LMAO .... more like 3,000 survived his incompetence ....

    • John  •  4 mths ago
He "...tripped, and fell into a lifeboat."Well, he should have turned around and "tripped" his #$%$ right out of it...
    • Tiffany  •  4 mths ago
Whatever happened to "A captain goes down with his ship"?
My concern his HIM, not the girl who is defending him. Her opinion doesn't matter as much as the captain's actions.
    • MrsJ  •  Portland, Maine  •  4 mths ago
What's in it for her, I wonder.
    • D M  •  Dallas, Texas  •  4 mths ago
What an idiot, he put "3000 lives at risk" and killed at least 11 if not more and damaged a half billion dollar ship. This guy deserves to rot in an Italian prision where he will be the girlfriend to a big hairy Italian stallion.
    • danman  •  Stockton, California  •  4 mths ago
This was a serious tragedy with legal implications. She should be careful about making up stories.

When you are the Captain of a ship, or an airplane, you are responsible for everything that happens unless there are mitigating and demonstrable circumstances (Like a german U-boat torpedoed her). You do not leave. You make safe and order the crew into evacuation procedures. Women and children leave first. You grab your sidearm, and oversee the evacuation of the passengers and crew. When no reasonable person would believe anyone is left, you can leave the ship. He should never have left the ship. How he got in this jam we won't know for a while, but we do know he left the ship before seeing to the safety of all passengers and crew risking his own life. He must have taken all available precautions and used all available communication devices to call for help. Passangers should have been drilled on emergency procedures and were not. You must not have a drop of alcohol in your body while on duty. You are responsible for the actions of your subordinates and can issue disciplinary action at your whim until reaching shore. A real man captain knows this. This would never have happened if the captain had served in the U.S. Navy. Everything, everyone, every possibility is your problem. If his engines blew up he can still be responsible if the maintenanece logs show lack of maintenance. Barring any issue like that, he can be exonerated and restored to duty. It is a high hurdle for a reason. If he had had a big proble 200 miles out to sea, everyone would have died. Do you know why airplane pilots are so careful now?
    • willr  •  4 mths ago
Never mind how many he saved, how many did he kill?
    • wiscdance  •  Milwaukee, Wisconsin  •  4 mths ago
I'm still not sure how the two women in the Captain's life (wife and this woman) think he saved 3000 lives? No lives would have been in jeopardy if he had kept on the cruise line's approved route. He killed at least 11 people, possibly 32 people, so he is no hero.
The Captain's responsibility is to stay with his ship. The fact that he jumped ship, won't accept responsibility and apologize for his bad judgement shows what a coward he truly is.
    • Bad Bob  •  Milwaukee, Wisconsin  •  4 mths ago
So...falling in the lifeboat saved 3000 people? The implies that if he had actually directed the evacuation 3000 people would have died. That I can believe.

Ms Moldova went down many times on that ship
