An upclose (too close?) look at a Fukushima nuclear reactor

Buckle up, kids. BoingBoing has posted an amazing video that was shot inside a failed Fukushima nuclear reactor.

The video, you will not be surprised to learn, was shot via remote control. Not even the most dedicated cinematographer would volunteer for this gig--the reactor was significantly damaged in the 9.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan in April of last year. The three Fukushima reactors that were operational all experienced full meltdown. The video was shot by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) in reactor number 2, and showed the level of coolant water is lower than experts expected.

The Japan Times says that while the video will help experts learn the amount of internal damage at the plant, it is "unlikely to help Tepco to determine the state of the melted nuclear fuel, much of which is believed to have burned down to the bottom of the containment vessels."

As the Japan Times puts it, "Obtaining a clearer picture inside the containment vessels of the three crippled reactors is critically important, as the vessels are the last line of defense containing their melted nuclear fuel."

If you want to know how hair-raising a partial meltdown was here in the U.S., read the book titled We Almost Lost Detroit, by John G. Fuller. It's a history of Fermi 1, America's first commercial breeder reactor, which had a partial nuclear meltdown in 1966. They had to cut off the head and hands of a dead technician and bury them separately in a lead box because he was so radioactive.

The Rockedyne facility above Simi, Valley California had a few melt downs in the 50's. At least two, but you rarely hear about it because it wasn't a commercial power plant. In the 90's it was discovered the portion of the city below the facility harbored large cancer clusters.

Only in the last few years did they remove the contaminated building of the runaway reactor. I used to live in Simi valley. They were trying to work on nuclear powered rocket engines. Strange coincidence before I moved to Simi valley ca. I lived one field away from the Enrico Fermi Breeder Reactor , the worlds first privately constructed breeder reactor. As a Kid , I helped put up the sign at the entrance and took my high school science class on tour of the plant as well as the Detroit Edison Trenton electrical generating station when I was Vice President of the high school science club. The first problem with the reactor happened when a zirconium plate on the reactor floor angled to disperse the nuclear pile in case of a meltdown broke loose and plugged the cooling sodium flow in the reactor causing it to overheat. The second accident I remember was when a heat exchanger broke down allowing liquid sodium to come in contact with the water in the heat exchanger which produced acetylene gas which exploded. When the reactor was decommissioned they simply stored the radioactive sodium in 50 gallon drums and left it in the containment vessel. The drums were only moved a few years ago when it was discovered that they were rusting. The new reactor in a different containment vessel in a different building is non breeder with a different cooling method.

The earthquake hit in March, not April... get your facts straight Yahoo.

The article was reported by Mike Krumboltz from the The Upshot. Yahoo is only retransmitting Upshot's article. Try directing your comments to the editor of The Upshot. Reading the article a little closer may help prevent you from spewing your wrath at the wrong party.

Also, the reactors weren't damaged by the earthquake... they were damaged when the earthquake-spawned tsunami disabled the power systems required to keep the reactor cooling systems operating.

Looks like the video of my colonoscopy.

That's a "Wessel" not a Vessel as Lt. Checkof would say!

The good news is this much radiation may bring back Godzilla and Mothra!

      @ Jim.........Crappy G.E. Reactors.????
I suppose you would rather they had been Russian designed reactors like what blew up in Pripyat / Chernobyl ???

At least two of the reactors have melted down. Michigan had "hot " rain a couple of days ago. Where are the reports of radiation rising in the jet stream? I'm not asking 'If", I'm asiking why our media isn't reporting it?

The early stages of the Zombie Apocalypse.... Better invest in a lead jock strap.

As far as hot rain in Michigan goes...One article repeated by many, shall we say, less than mainstream media outlets Vs. a cover up of monumental size by every other news gathering source, and every college and/or business with a geiger counter...Call me a bit suspicious to the so-called Michigan Hot Rain...the odds seem a little skewed against it.

Sadly... this reporter (Mike Krumboltz) mixed up his Sesame Street article (written for 5 year old's) with his Yahoo article, that or there is a much deeper problem here with Yahoo News...

Idiots - you will probably be surprised to learn that there are NO ladders in nuclear reactors. The video may have been shot in the reactor BUILDING OR containment BUILDING. But it was not shot IN the REACTOR. The reactor has nuclear fuel rods in it but does not have pipes and ladders in it. The media idiots should make one phone call to someone that knows a little about the subject.

My friend works in nuclear industry, but even I found your attitude rude. Are you an expert in every discipline, unlikely.

CLM is correct, and Drew....you would be surprised what's out here.

Looked more like a steam seperator or steam dryer than a ladder to me.... just my humble opinion.

That reactor is really Fukushima'd up.
    • Just Me, Richard  •  4 mths ago
Like, far out, man! Totally psychedelic... What the heck did I just see? Was the radiation so high that it affected the video? Obviously the water vapor / condensation made it almost impossible to see anything.

to be safe they should cover the entire country in cement, its the right thing to do...

Oh yes, that video is just so AMAZING, isn't it? It's so AMAZING that I'll have to take your word that it was shot inside Fukushima. It might as well be the refrigerator in my grandmother's garage.

This is SO much worse than they're letting on.

Mainly because these crappy GE reactors are all over the USA, way beyond their original life spans, and often near fault lines.

The guys running this dog and pony show are killing us all.
    • Americans First  •  4 mths ago
If the pile is now sitting on the floor of the containment vessel as supposed it's only a matter of time before it burns through. They won't be able to keep it cool enough to prevent it.

Ummm, fukumamas reactor up close? Is that what she's calling IT today? Too close and I'd throw up.
