Video shows bully attacking 15-year-old gay student

More and more people are speaking out against bullying, but the practice remains distressingly common in the nation's schools. All too often, gay teens are the victims. The newest example is especially disturbing.

In Chillicothe, Ohio, a 15-year-old gay teen was beaten in a school classroom. The incident was captured on camera, revealing a classroom full of students who did nothing to break up the assault.

The attacking student has received a three-day suspension, but Rebecca Collins, mother of the student who was beaten,  says this isn't enough. She is pursuing her options with law enforcement. Her son, who was also harassed on Facebook,  suffered a possible concussion and a chipped tooth in the attack. You can watch the video footage of the assault after the jump, but should be warned that it makes for disturbing viewing.

give a few bullies public beatings, then ask for volunteers to fill the vacant bully position

Please do not support bigotry / intolerance which can lead to hate crimes. Support an end to bullying and organized stalking (multi-bullies).

Remove the word "gay" from this story, and you still have a beating - regardless of gender or sexuality. The issue here is the beating, and the bully needs to be held accountable. If another student had the time to record the events leading up to the beating, then he/she had time to stop the attack.
      • Prince 7 mths ago
Yeah but at least its a HAPPY beating. Get it (Happy, Gay) nevrmind went over your head.
      • Andrew N 7 mths ago
Except when the victim is targeted because they are gay, that makes it quite relevant.
      • Chris 6 mths ago
The only problem with your idea is that people don't realize or think about what happens to gays on pretty much a daily basis. They have done studies about how every day gay kids listen to about 25 anti-gay comments at school. Life is hard for these kids and that colors their outlook on life and people.

I was a teacher. This is part of the reason I retired. The hoodlums can do what they want. It's one horror story after another. It's part of the reason that we've become a world wide joke. We can't even protect ourselves from our own children. Shame on us. I hope that mother goes after the bully, his parents, the principal, and the schoolboard. If you want to really hurt someone, hit them in the wallet.

Me too. And thanks for working as a teacher, which is mostly a low paying and sometimes thankless job.

I heard today a kindergarden kid sent a teacher to the hospital. this is insane!
      • justducky 6 mths ago
I understand that teachers are between a rock and a hard place. I wouldn't want the job. Guess we can thank all the bleeding hearts out there that want to protect teenage criminals from punishment and a sympathedic congress for that. Sure hope the parent gets the support she needs to bring charges to all involved, including the school board.

Suspension!!!!? Seriously? That's assault! Why were the police not called? If a kid shows up to school with a suspicious bruise, they call CPS. But a kid gets assaulted in a classroom on camera and no one calls the cops???? The school is now an accomplice to the crime. I would OWN that school district!

see what kind of US we live in, there used to be a time when 2 kids had a problem with each other they would have a fight and after there problems were over
      • Kampon 6 mths ago
I totally agree with you Chuck!

Try and get any substantial sanctions against a teacher, principal, or administrator at that school. Good luck getting around the union.
    • That guy  •  6 mths ago
The point is that sexual imorality has no place in school. That kid should have kept his perversion to himself and he would not have gotten beat up. Why didn't the school or the kid's mom put him in a special class or get him help for his perversion?

Wow, whatever happened to waiting outside the bullies home in the bushes with a 2x4? That'll get it into the court system. Must protect the rights of the criminals, ya know..

AGREED but just which criminals ? police, schools, courts, religious institutions or what
    • Jennifer  •  Conroe, United States  •  6 mths ago
Why does the mother have to pursue charges? I would think that the police would be required to pick the bully up. If I had children in that school I would be outraged that the bully was let back in. Period. We are required to educate children, not put children in harms way. At some point we need to quit bowing down to the few and worry about the many.

That wasn't bullying, it was assault.
    • Randy  •  Wallingford, United States  •  6 mths ago
it does not matter why he was attacked, he was and the other student should have been arrested and put into jail until he went to court. maybe that would have cooled him off for a while. 3 days out of school is a vacation these days. I think the school should be sued for this stupid response
    • Nick  •  6 mths ago
Three days! What kind of #$%$ is that!?! That was battery!
    • Rusty Shachalferd  •  Houston, United States  •  7 mths ago
A three day suspension? I've heard of students getting worse punishment for violating a school's zero tolerance policy for drugs because a student brought an aspirin to school. And once again there were bystanders who stood by and did nothing (some bystanders will even laugh and encourage a bully). In my opinion they're no better than the bully. Perhaps a class-action lawsuit against the school district and the parents of the bully are in order.
    • Dana  •  7 mths ago
3 day suspension, that's disgusting, he should have been suspended permanently from public schools. They would be doing him a favor if he got the rest of his 'education' in juvenile detention. With his current mentality he will be in prison by the time he's 18.
    • Mom4Christ  •  6 mths ago
My son defended himself against a bully at school and they both were suspended for 3 days. Needless to say he did not get in trouble at home. I told the school that my son is nobody's punching bag & that the school had BETTER keep him safe while he is there. Nobody bothered him the rest of the school year (this was after 2 1/2 yrs of being bullied). People need to be allowed to defend themselves without fear of punishment.
    • bigtop  •  7 mths ago
Yeah the kid was waiting for him, this was premeditated.. It wasnt like it was two young chaps just got into a fight, this was an attack. So I think this assault.
    • CaliCoyote  •  6 mths ago
This was a premeditated assault. He made comments on Facebook, he had a friend ready with a camera, and he chose a classroom with poor supervision. (Note the students wandering around the room and the lack of a teacher). He should be charged with a felony and tried as an adult.
    • one voice  •  7 mths ago
Because it happened at school it's not considered a crime? The attacker should be behind bars right now!! I don't know why the mother of the victim has to think about anything! Shouldn't the POLICE have been called by the school and the attacker taken away in handcuffs? It's not "schoolyard bullying" it is assault and it's a crime against society. NO questions TO ask!
    • Blondie  •  7 mths ago
The perpetrator should be expelled. Schools need to have zero tolerance for this kind of violence. A three day suspension is nothing and that boy will gladly spend the time at home watching TV and eating ice cream.
    • The Frog  •  7 mths ago
He needs to be charged as an adult. Assault with intent to cause great bodily injury and a hate crime. We, as a society, need to make an example out of this criminal.
