    Top 5 island getaways

No man is an island, but sometimes it sure is nice to be on one. But there's no need to fly to Fiji or move to the Maldives; there are plenty of great island getaways here in the States.

    5) Nantucket Island, Massachusetts: It may the source of many a nice (or naughty) limerick, but Nantucket is also home to beautiful beaches, charming lighthouses and a rich maritime history.

    4) Grand Isle, Louisiana: For a more sultry experience (temperature wise, at least), the warm Gulf waters around Grand Isle are perfect for swimming and fishing year-round. Rumor has it that pirate Jean Lafitte hung out near this island, so keep an eye peeled for buried treasure.

    3) Sanibel Island, Gulf Coast, Florida: Off the coast of Florida, you'll find many islands, but perhaps only one that can boast of more than 250 types of seashells that get washed ashore here by the Gulf Stream. If collecting sand dollars isn't your thing, there's always boating, fishing, snorkeling, scuba, bird watching and much more.

    2) Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Hilton Head may be small (12 miles by 5 miles), but it's packed to the gills with all kinds of entertainment and activities. Rough it by kayaking through a wild refuge, then hit it in the rough at one of the world-class golf courses. It's also known as a top family-friendly getaway, so don't leave the little ones at home.

    1) Oahu, Hawaii: Over on the other side of the U.S. lies this top island getaway. Unwind on pristine beaches or catch some heavy waves on the North Shore. Oahu has a mix of natural beauty, history and modern attractions that will make it hard for any visitor to say "aloha" to this island.

I dont know,i kinda liked Gilligans Island

You either get Grand Isle or you don't. If simplicity is your style you will love Grand Isle. Folks can pull a camper here and stay for the winter for $100. a week. Peace and quiet sun and sand. No airports and no junk touching. We like to think of it as a little south of America, the beginning of HWY 1. The next best thing to Gilligan's Isle.

Oahu is the most beautiful in my opinion but we are being over loaded by homeless and meth heads!

I lived in Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii and I hated it. I spent so much time snorkeling my bathing suit was 2 different colors. Because ther wasn't a whole lot more to do. I went to the Grand Cayman's many, many years later and WOW....the water there is amazing! Absolutely Amazing!
      • tacymarie 5 mths ago
Oahu is not beautiful as a whole. Mililani Town is.

      • MARIE 5 mths ago
I agree. The big island was amazing and has soooooo much breathtaking scenery that costs nothing literally.
      • vinnie 5 mths ago
yes, house prices much more reasonable as well, and they have a free transit system that circles the entire island. no car necessary.

I can afford to pay my cable bill and watch the travel channel. It's just as relaxing and no tsa agents touching my junk.
      • Mike 5 mths ago
In the last few years I've traveled a little bit, Hawaii and to Europe mostly. Probably 30 times. Never had my junk touched once. Maybe I got lucky I guess. I like the travel channel also, cool places to go, in the US and all over the world

try watching the morning traffic report for Oahu and after that tell me it is a great place to go to or visit, their traffic is as bad as LA, SF , Boston or any other major metro area, Big Island is MUCH better as is Kauai, these people that wrote this article are idiots
    • David  •  Pleasanton, California  •  5 mths ago
Yes Oahu is great if you have the genetics of an islander. If you are white you better grow eyes in the back of your head because you'll probably get the crap beat out of you because of your skin color.
    • Thomas  •  Mililani Town, Hawaii  •  5 mths ago
Go to Kauai. It's better there. Too much people on this island. On top of that we keep getting a #$%$load of everyone else's homeless.
    • DD Sims  •  5 mths ago
      Oahu is overrated.
