Boat capsizes off Nova Scotia, search underway for five fishermen

HALIFAX - A search is underway for five fishermen whose vessel has capsized off the southwest coast of Nova Scotia.

A navy spokesman says the 13-metre boat had a crew of five on board when it sent out a distress signal at 11 p.m. Sunday.

Lt. Peter Ryan says two Canadian Coast Guard vessels and a helicopter were dispatched to the area, about 120 kilometres southeast of Liverpool.

Ryan says weather conditions were poor at the time the distress beacon was picked up.

He says hurricane force winds whipped up 10-metre waves in zero visibility.

The fishing vessel is based in the Shelburne County area of southwestern Nova Scotia.
