Bobby Brown on Whitney Houston: ‘I’m not the reason she’s gone’
Bobby Brown, the ex-husband of the Whitney Houston, said that he had nothing to do with the late singer’s descent into drug addiction.
In an interview with Matt Lauer on “Today” Wednesday, Brown talked about the last time he saw the singer, and rejected the notion that he introduced her to drugs. “I’m not the reason she’s gone,” he said.
Brown and Houston publicly battled with alcohol and drug use during their troubled 15-year marriage, some of which was chronicled on their reality show, “Being Bobby Brown.”
Lauer asked Brown about the last time he saw the singer before she died in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton on Feb. 11.
“[She] had this glow about her that was just, you know, incredible,” he said. “I’m saying to myself, you know, ‘She must be — she must be doing really well.’”
Houston’s autopsy concluded that she died from an accidental drowning with cocaine in her system. Brown said that he was surprised she was doing drugs, because he claims to be clean for years.
“I was hurt. I was hurt, because, you know, me being off of narcotics for the last seven years, I felt that she was, you know, I didn’t know she was struggling with it still,” Brown said.
Lauer asked Brown if he introduced Houston to hard drugs, since her life and career appeared to go downhill once the couple married in 1992. “I didn’t get high [on narcotics] before I met Whitney,” Brown said. “I smoked weed, I drank the beer, but no, I wasn’t the one that got Whitney on drugs at all.”
He said hard drugs were a part of the singer’s life “way before” they got together.
“It’s just — it’s just unexplainable how one could, you know, [say that I] got her addicted to drugs. I’m not the reason she’s gone,” Brown said.
But many in Houston’s family, including Brown and Houston’s daughter together, Bobbi Kristina, have publicly distanced themselves from Brown in the wake of the singer’s death.
Brown was arrested for a DUI after he failed a field sobriety test on March 26. He spent one day in jail and will spend the next three years on probation, the Los Angeles Times reported.
In a second interview set to air Thursday, three of Brown’s children with other women speak to Lauer about their father’s public persona, but Bobbi Kristina will not participate in the sit-down interview.
