    Bobby Jindal joins Iowa fray

PERRY, Iowa — He once was a full-time congressman, but Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal says the law should change so members of Congress only work part-time in Washington.

In an interview on Monday night with The Daily Caller, the popular Republican said he fully backs the part-time Congress proposal that Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry is pushing.

“It’s what the founding fathers intended. It’s the way the Congress has operated before. It’s the way many of our state legislatures offer,” Jindal said.

The Louisiana governor is one of Perry’s most high-profile endorsers. He stood on stage with Perry at the Hotel Pattee for a rally with supporters on the eve of the caucuses, which take place on Tuesday night.

Jindal gave a full-throated defense of the idea, saying the way Congress is now has created a “separate political class.”

“They’re looking for ways to expand their power, expand their authority, in ways the Founding Fathers never intended, in violation of the meaning and spirit of the Constitution,” he said.

Asked to respond to criticism that a part-time Congress would only make full-time lobbyists more powerful, he said, “I think it’s questionable whether lobbyists could be more powerful than they are today.”

“The reality is I think you need not only a part-time Congress, you need stronger disclosure and ethics rules. I think that would have to be part of the reform.”

“It works at the state level,” he said.

Jindal clearly enjoyed himself at the Perry event, staying behind to sign autographs and take photos with supporters. Asked if he could see running for national office himself in the future, he quickly said, “I’m focused on my job back home, I’m focused on helping Rick Perry get elected.”

They would have to work up to the part time point. Now they don't work at all.

Who is "they"? Who, as a group, doesn't work at all? I don't know of any such group, although I do see people from all walks of life appearing to not work. We knew this would happen, that we would become a welfare society, decades ago, but we continued to elect people who were openly making it happen. As I see it now, very few have been able to resist the temptation of a handout, justifying it with the assertion "might as well, ' they' are getting it." I'm getting confused as to who constitutes this "they". Oh, and are "they" worse for not working than, say, those who go to offices but produce little more than computer jokes and chain letters, or those who perform minimally in their jobs and engage in all manner of petty crimes in order to cheat the system which enables them to be there but useless?

If you forced Congress to go part time, they would CERTAINLY keep the same pay and benefits. Or do you really think they will take a pay cut? After all, they set their OWN pay. Wish I could do that.

It would not matter since what they do is not productive anyway; but it would give them less time for mischief. A mans property, liberty and life are in constant danger whenever the legislature is in session--Benjamin Franklin

Term Limits (10 yrs. max), no pensions or benefits, no insider stock trading, no contact with lobbyists, and strict adherence to the Constitution. Nothing changes in DC until these happen.

They only work, and I use the term loosely, part time now. Most of their time is spent cozying up to lobbyists and special interests.

Didn't realize they were working full time already? Thought that they were just working to keep Americans from voting, getting married, getting health insurance and so on.

Sounds like Mr Jindal has really brought out the racisim in America. Heck at least he stood up to the EPA and Obama after the oil spill. That means he's not a suck-up in my book and won't be somebodys "yes" man.

Law or no law, they ONLY WORK PART TIME NOW, what, on earth would change if there was a law ? They would work less than they do ? No wonder we haven't heard anything from this man since his "response" to President Obama's first State of the Union address THREE YEARS AGO ! ! !

Funny all the sourpuss(y) bashers show up. Can't give a legit comment just negative....The truth is that a part time legislature is all we need. The full time one costs too much and spends like they have the money....they do..........OURS.. middle class, working people, employers and up pay all kinds of taxes and fees(their new fav way to deny they raise taxes) and income taxes if their incomes qualify so the money is OURS. 40,000 new laws to take effect this year....40,000 reasons to KTBO (kick the bums out..all of them!!!!). We have too many lawyers (politicians) and not enought lay people (average citizens) in our government and also in the lobby groups. It just need to BE STOPPED by any way we can and regain control of our future as a REPUBLIC.

Well, I USED to think Jindal had a future in politics. Getting behind Perry, shows some serious lack of judgement on Bobby's part.
    • FORWARD  •  4 mths ago
He probably meant they should get paid for part-time work. Lord, and these guys are in charge! Help us please!

Bobby Jindal likes a part time Congress because he was a part timer.... Bobby Jindal missed 427 (18%) of 2,400 roll call votes between Jan 4, 2005 and Dec 19, 2007.

Bobby Jindal = hoping for a speaking gig at the GOP convention.
    • senior fellow  •  4 mths ago
I really thought that jindal was smarter than that. It's such a stupid idea that it hardly bears refuting, but here goes -- the problems w/ congress have absolutely nothing to do with how many hours they work. If they are "part-time" (whatever that means), they will have more time for fund-raising, campaigning, working in the private sector for wall street doing consulting for $1.6M like Newt, or golfing with lobbyists.

A far better idea would be to pay them a fair even generous wage with the same benefits that other federal workers get, bar them from any outside income while serving in Congress, require them to put their assets in blind trust while in office and prohibit gifts from lobbyists. Not perfect, but a start.
    • Nightwing  •  4 mths ago
Instead of working part-time in Congress, we need for them to have TERM limits. THAT will stop the lobbyists making long time deals with people that they know will be in there for a long time. Serve only 2-3 terms and GET OUT
    • The Weeper of the House  •  4 mths ago
Do you think Newt was actually working 'full time' for Freddie Mac lol? Jindal saw that other has-beens were being courted by the ideologically bankrupt GOP, so he figured he should step back into the limelight.
    • just wondering  •  4 mths ago
part time? now instead of just having dinner with lobbyists, they will wake up next to them.
    • BrianF  •  New York, New York  •  4 mths ago
These are the same people who complain when Congress takes endless vacations. Which is it, Republicans? How about, they work 50 weeks a year and spend 48 of them meeting with constituents -- not big corporate lobbyists. But, of course, Republicans love corporate lobbyists, so that's a no-go.
