Bodies found in Mexico might be kidnapped marines

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Mexican navy said Thursday it found bodies in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz that could include those of three marines and a naval cadet kidnapped by suspected drug cartel gunmen earlier this month.

Mexican drug cartels have kidnapped and killed military personnel before, but it remains a relatively rare occurrence.

The navy said in a statement that objects belonging to the kidnapped servicemen were found in a raid on a warehouse Sunday and that investigators later found the four bodies in four pits on the outskirts of the state capital.

The raid also resulted in the capture of five people suspected of participating in the abductions, authorities said.

Neither the navy nor federal security spokesman would say which cartel the suspects allegedly worked for, but the Zetas gang is known to be active in the area.

The statement said the bodies were being examined to determine whether they were the servicemen, who went missing in the first week of August. Three of them went missing while driving in a civilian car and the fourth one disappeared while off duty.

At the time, authorities said that a drug cartel was suspected in the abductions.

Two other navy personnel also disappeared earlier this summer in Veracruz. Their whereabouts remain unknown.

Also Thursday, soldiers killed eight gunmen in a clash in the northern border state of Nuevo Leon, authorities said.

Soldiers were on patrol in the town of Agualeguas when they came under fire from gunmen who were inside a house, said a state official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not allowed to discuss the case.

The official said six gunmen died inside the house and soldiers killed two others on an empty lot nearby. Soldiers seized 10 automatic rifles, 2,000 rounds of ammunition and military uniforms.

Violence in Nuevo Leon state, across the border from Texas, exploded when the Zetas cartel broke away from the Gulf cartel, setting off a battle for control of the area. Their fighting has killed more than 1,000 people so far this year.

Elsewhere in Mexico, police in the Pacific coast resort of Acapulco reported Thursday finding two ice chests, one of which held a man's head and the other containing what appeared to be his leg and right foot.

Guerrero state police said three other coolers were found in another part of the city with other body parts. Police were trying to determine if all five coolers contained parts of the same person.

Several other coolers containing body parts were found at other points in the city, and police were investigating whether they were all from the same body.

In addition, three men were found shot to death in city buses, including one driver.

As a Mexican American I'm disgusted that my people are doing this. How can we kill off our own people for drugs and ransom money? Its horrible. The people from the towns need to stand up and fight back. I know its hard but we cant let the cartels run the beautiful country Mexico is. I fear for my grandmother and cousins who live in Mexico now.

Your people are terrorized in their own homes because they aren't allowed to have the tools to fight back. The government is corrupt, and the cartels have billions to buy black market weapons from overseras, yet homeowners can't own even a single handgun easily. I feel for the common man living in the midddle of all of this and can't have a peaceful life. That is who has my deepest sympathies.

Yes, is true. Their is no need to deploy, the war, and the front lines is at their doorstep. The majority of the Mexican people are friendly and want to live in peace. Unfortunately, drugs, greed, and government corruption have taken ahold of this country. Do not blame the US for the problems, sadly the insatiable appetite for drugs is worldwide.

That should be enough to send the Marines in and put an end to the drug cartels there.

Their military doesn't even need to deploy, their deployment is just in their own backyard. Does the Mexican soldier still get a medal for going to fight a war in his own country?

ok here we go a stupid question for stupid people, IS NOT THE DEPLOY DISTANCE, IS THE BRAVE OF SOLDIER'S, I DON'T THINK A U.S. SOLDIER OR MEXICAN SOLDIER WANT A MEDAL VS LIFE

People until Marijuana becomes legal the Big Boys(CARTEL) are going to win. 30 year drug war and not even a dent. When you play with the big boys you can get hurt. that just the way it is

We will see these types of crimes here soon - our government doesn't secure our border and lets illegals stay and suck off of our system while they sell drugs like the Iraqi-Mexican cartel that was just busted in El Cajon, CA. Our leaders democrat and republican are as corrupt as the Mexican leaders.

Mexico faces the same problems as all countries they are just failing more miserably to solve them. The are a poster nation for what happens when gross corruption is allowed to run wild. If not for their geographic location I'd swear they were another African country.

You better look at world ranking 12 with 753 billion GNP, the problem is distribution
The wealthy are still top 5% middle class is nearly none existent, and poor make up the majority of population, does it sound familiar.

Mexicans have nobody to blame except themselves for the state of their failed cesspool.

Is the Government of Mexico that weak that a drug cartel will do anything they want and get away with it?

the president of mexico is the problem, i myself am american and have lived in mexico near monterrey for 6 months, its an impoverished nation to say the least....i can understand why people living there come here, it is unbelievable what they go through daily just to eat...they will never fix the problem with the border..why? because at least half of the border patrol, customs agents, etc. are in on it making some money on the side...some of them are forced to do it to save their own life, how crazy is that? prayers for my family in mexico...God bless all of them...its all about money and as for the drug cartels, i will never be able to understand the barbaric acts they do the each other or to innocent citizens there, just pure EVIL....makes me want to vomit each time i hear another story of them finding body parts spread here and there...

We would not take a simple and most effective measure to deal with this ( to protect our corrupt ). Make it illegal for any citizen of any country to have a foreign bank account and do not deal with the banks and off-shore institutions which do no comply. The world will be a safer and cleaner place and by the way , it would solve our economic problems.
