    Bolivia's teachers getting 'presidential' laptops

    LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — Bolivia's government is giving school teachers free laptops with a prominent detail that is generating criticism for President Evo Morales. A stenciled image of a smiling Morales is on the back of each computer.

    Teachers union leader Jose Luis Alvarez in La Paz says that's just promoting idolatry. He says teachers will cover the image.

    Education Ministry Roberto Aguilar said Monday that government officials originally planned to put on an image of Bolivia's nine-colored indigenous flag but manufacturer Lenovo recommended something simpler.

    The government is handing out 130,000 laptops worth more than $50 million. They have processors from Intel Corp., operating systems by Linux and Microsoft Corp. and 320-gigabyte hard drives.

      That's a lot of laptops, good for them. What services are going to be offered to them, or is that where they have to pay so really it could be just another design to make cash off the poor. Just saying.

      Just slap a sticker on that new laptop that says "Support Indigenous Rights"- and lets see if Evo is really a crazed dictator, or just lacking creativity. A crazed dictator wouldn't allow their image to be covered up.

      Anyway- do you not have any species endemic to Bolivia? No wonderful plants found nowhere else? No beautiful views that you can see nowhere else? If these are the only symbols of country- your flag and your leader- that you think of as being COUNTRY, you obviously do not even know your own country. Sad to see that even an indigenous leader would not even look closely upon their own land for symbols of place.

      Yeah, like I'm going to believe that when someone said "simpler" they decided a portrait was needed instead, of the president no less.

        I'm assuming that it's a black and white image of him, as opposed to a 9 color flag.
        9 color flags probably don't come out well in b&w or gray scale.

      Traveling through Bolivia is like traveling back in time. Most people live simple lives where they really don't miss much due to the fact that they don't know what exists.

      But, I must caution the Bolivians, about the cultural disparity in the West and between NA and South America. In essence, they are different from the standpoint of mass consumption and the urban chaos that is considered somewhat normal, here in the West! If one searches for peace and can't find anything peaceful in NA, there are people who would travel far and wide to find peace elsewhere:)
