A great presentation can break the listeners’ petrified opinions and inspire action, Boylan says. And to be great a presentation must first be memorable.
Tactic 8 in “Stop Being predictable” is to be more conversational and less “presentational.” Boylan says that presenters normally leave 5 percent of their allotted time for questions and answers. Instead, he recommends using more than half of the time to interact with the audience. This departure from the typical norm will make the presentation memorable, and more importantly, effective.

In “Stop Being Predictable,” Boylan says that presenters are comfortable with how they have presented hundreds of times before. Unfortunately, listeners do not want to hear what they’ve heard hundreds of times before. Most likely they will have to have coffee and toothpicks to keep their eyes open.
With “Stop Being Predictable,” in the time it takes to fly from one city to another, readers can learn about and understand at least one of the 14 tactics and put it to use in their next presentation. Though simple, these tactics are not business as usual for presenters.
While presenters are typically reluctant to get out of their comfort zone, Boylan knows from experience that these tactics will help achieve a better success rate. Each is set up so that people can recognize themselves in a typical problem situation that commonly occurs during presentations. Then the tactic — Boylan’s solution to the problem — is stated. This is followed by a real-life success story about a presenter who used the tactic. The final section in each tactic details what readers can do right now to put the idea into practice.
